SPR Characteristics Curve and Distribution of Residual Stress in Self-Piercing Riveted Joints of Steel Sheets

Abstract: Neutron diffraction was used to describe the residual stress distributions in self-piercing riveted (SPR) joints. The sheet material displayed a compressive residual stress near the joint, and the stress gradually became tensile in the sheet material far away from the joint. The stress in the rivet leg was lower in the thick joint of the softer steel sheet than in the thin joint of the harder steel sheet. This lower magnitude was attributed to the lower force gradient during the rivet flaring stage of the SPR process curve. This study shows how the residual stress results may be related to the physical occurrences that happened during joining, using the characteristics curve. The study also shows that neutron diffraction technique enabled a crack in the rivet tip to be detected which was not apparent from a cross-section.

Melt pool temperature and its effect on clad formation in pulsed Nd:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser cladding of Stellite 6

Abstract: The effective melt pool temperature in pulsed Nd:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser cladding of Stellite 6 was measured with a two-color pyrometer. The pulse peak temperature (Tp) and durations when the melt pool temperature is above the melting point of Stellite 6 powder (t1) and substrate (t2) in each pulse have been calculated and averaged. The effects of laser operating parameters (pulse energy, pulse frequency, spot overlap, powder mass flow rate, and pulse length) on these values have been investigated. It is found that Tp depends on the peak laser power, pulse length and determines the maximum size of melt pool (DM), whereas both t1 and t2 increase with peak power, pulse frequency (f), pulse length, and spot overlap. The prediction of the clad area, the total area of a single-track clad layer, based on Tp, t1, and t2 is given for pulsed laser cladding of Stellite 6. Comparison between the experimental data and prediction has been made with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. In order to produce a larger single-track clad area, the higher value of the product of f⋅t1 and longer beam interaction time (τ) are required.

Abstract: Modification of the microstructure of ZE41A-T5 magnesium alloy substrates was investigated by laser surface re-melting and solidification using a 2.5 kW Nd:YAG laser. The effects of laser power, high scan rate and beam configuration were examined. The microstructure of laser treated ZE41 consisted of small precipitates dispersed in a fine dendritic α-magnesium matrix at high scan rates. The redistribution of chemical elements depended mainly on the dwell time in the liquid stage. At high scan rates, long dwell times were achieved by splitting the laser beam into two spots trailing in the scan direction which resulted in a more homogenous distribution of Mg, Zn and Zr. Cracking due to thermal shrinkage during solidification was prevented by reducing the temperature of the melt pool. This was achieved by lowering the laser power, increasing the scan rate and laser spot size. Increasing the laser spot size in the scan direction was conducive to producing homogeneous microstructures without cracks.

Abstract: The collapse modes and energy absorption in three-point bending of composite sandwich beams were explored experimentally. Sandwich beams manufactured from woven carbon fibre face sheets encapsulating aluminium foam cores were investigated at 0.001 s-1 and 100 s-1 strain rates. Three modes of failure were observed during deformation: Modes H1, H2 and H3. The direction of core shear played an important role in the energy absorption of the structure. Mode H2 gave rise to the highest specific energy absorption of the composite sandwich beams studied.

Abstract: Lattice structures are widely used in various engineering applications due to their high weight-to-strength ratio and exceptional energy absorbing performance. The feasibility of using different base materials to fabricate these cellular structures with complex geometries has been significantly broadened with the development of additive manufacturing technology. In this paper, quasi-static mechanical properties and energy absorption capability of polyamide PA 2200 (nylon 12) lattice structures were investigated by using finite element analysis (FEA) in ANSYS/LS-DYNA. Three types of lattice structures composed of body-centred cubic (BCC) unit cells were studied, including uniform lattice structures, uni-directionally graded lattice structures and bi-directionally graded structures. Finite element simulations were consistent with experimental data reported in literature. The results showed that bi-directionally graded lattice structures exhibited superior crushing resistance and higher energy absorption capacity than uniform and uni-directionally graded lattice structures. It showed that density grading design of lattice structures had significant influence on the deformation patterns and therefore, energy absorption performance.

Abstract: Experimental observations and data are employed to elucidate the effect of indenter size on the deformation and energy absorption of composite sandwich beams. Unlike metal face sheets that yield and plastically deform to create an intact indentation zone composite face sheets tend to fail in a brittle manner resulting in fibre breakage that leads to widespread fracture. This mode of failure can dictate how the load is transferred throughout the structure and directly affect the energy absorption character of the composite sandwich beam. Quasi-static and low velocity impact (LVI) three-point bending experiments with various indenter diameters were conducted to observe the interaction between indenter and face sheet and the energy absorption properties. The results are compared with existing analytical expressions.

Abstract: The feasibility of measuring residual stresses in Self-Pierce Riveted (SPR) joints by neutron diffraction was evaluated in this study. Despite the small dimensions involved, meaningful results were obtained. It was observed that residual stress in the rivet head was higher in the centre and lower at the edge. For the SPR joints examined, the maximum value of residual stress evaluated was 550MPa, compressive and occurred in the rivet leg. Stresses in material adjacent to the rivet wall and at a distance of three times the rivet radius from the rivet axis were not significant. The results are discussed with respect to the physical events involved during SPR.
