Abstract: Variability in galling caused by Leptocybe invasa Fisher & La Salle has been reported in several species and hybrids of Eucalyptus . Genetic ersity within Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. could confer resistance to L. invasa via variation in plant specialized metabolites or plant responses detrimental to insect herbivores. Moreover, optimal defence theory proposes that plants will invest more constitutive resistance in parts that are vulnerable to herbivore attack, such as immature leaves and apical buds, which are prone to galling. We investigated constitutive resistance of subspecies and genotypes of E. camaldulensis to L. invasa while controlling for differences among growing conditions characteristic of their autochthonous Australian habitats using common nursery and garden arboreta plantings. Data on galling intensity, gall size, leaf phenolics and leaf physical attributes were used to investigate differences in susceptibility. We show that E. camaldulensis exhibits both constitutive and induced resistance to L. invasa . Intraspecific variability in galling was pronounced and correlated with concentrations of quinic acid derivatives and hypersensitive abscission of leaves. Whether these metabolites directly affect the survival of eggs or larvae remains to be determined. Hypersensitive leaf abscission in subspecies of E. camaldulensis in response to injury by a galling insect has not been reported previously and warrants investigation.

Abstract: The role of archaea in microbial mats is poorly understood. Delineating the spatial distribution of archaea with mat depth will enable resolution of putative niches in these systems. In the present study, high throughput licon sequencing was undertaken in conjunction with analysis of key biogeochemical properties of two mats (smooth and pustular) from Shark Bay, Australia. One-way analysis of similarity tests indicated the archaeal community structures of smooth and pustular mats were significantly different (global R = 1, p = 0.1%). Smooth mats possessed higher archaeal ersity, dominated by Parvarchaeota. The methanogenic community in smooth mats was dominated by hydrogenotrophic Methanomicrobiales, as well as methylotrophic Methanosarcinales, Methanococcales, Methanobacteriales and Methanomassiliicoccaceae. Pustular mats were enriched with Halobacteria and Parvarchaeota. Key metabolisms (bacterial and archaeal) were measured, and the rates of oxygen production/consumption and sulfate reduction were up to four times higher in smooth than in pustular mats. Methane production peaked in the oxic layers and was up to seven-fold higher in smooth than pustular mats. The finding of an abundance of anaerobic methanogens enriched at the surface where oxygen levels were highest, coupled with peak methane production in the oxic zone, suggests putative surface anoxic niches in these microbial mats.

Abstract: Flowers which imitate insect oviposition sites probably represent the most widespread form of floral mimicry, exhibit the most erse floral signals and are visited by two of the most speciose and advanced taxa of insect – beetles and flies. Detailed comparative studies on brood-site mimics pollinated exclusively by each of these insect orders are lacking, limiting our understanding of floral trait adaptation to different pollinator groups in these deceptive systems. Two closely related and apparent brood-site mimics, Typhonium angustilobum and T. wilbertii (Araceae) observed to trap these distinct beetle and fly pollinator groups were used to investigate potential ergence in floral signals and traits most likely to occur under pollinator-mediated selection. Trapped pollinators were identified and their relative abundances enumerated, and thermogenic, visual and chemical signals and morphological traits were examined using thermocouples and quantitative reverse transcription–PCR, reflectance, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, floral measurements and microscopy. Typhonium angustilobum and T. wilbertii were functionally specialized to trap saprophagous Coleoptera and Diptera, respectively. Both species shared similar colour and thermogenic traits, and contained two highly homologous AOX genes (AOX1a and AOX1b) most expressed in the thermogenic tissue and stage (unlike pUCP). Scent during the pistillate stage differed markedly – T. angustilobum emitted a complex blend of sesquiterpenes, and T. wilbertii, a dung mimic, emitted high relative amounts of skatole, p-cresol and irregular terpenes. The species differed significantly in floral morphology related to trapping mechanisms. Functional specialization and pollinator ergence were not associated with differences in anthesis rhythm and floral thermogenic or visual signals between species, but with significant differences in floral scent and morphological features, suggesting that these floral traits are critical for the attraction and filtering of beetle or fly pollinators in these two brood-site mimics.

Abstract: Research Highlights: We present the first attempts to model the distributions of the two cryptic and globally invasive species of Leptocybe invasa sensu lato (Fisher & LaSalle) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in its purported country of origin, namely Australia. Background and Objectives: Leptocybe invasa is an invasive eucalypt-galling wasp that spread quickly all over the world in the early to mid-2000’s, achieving significant pest status through its severe impacts on the growth and productivity of extra-limital eucalypt plantations. Until its discovery in Europe and the Middle East, the genus was undescribed, and its native range remains unclear. Molecular studies indicate the globally invasive population comprises two cryptic species with variable modes of reproduction. Collection records from Australia, the purported origin, represent only one of the invasive lineages, restricted to subtropical and tropical Queensland and northern New South Wales. To date, the original invasive lineage has not been found in Australia, despite searches over the seventeen years that it has been spreading overseas. Materials and Methods: To understand the distributions of the invasive populations, and to infer Leptocybe spp. native ranges within Australia, we used correlative niche modelling in Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) and multivariate analysis, and created a CLIMEX model based on development rates of an invasive population. Results: We used the environmental conditions in the extra-limital range to infer possible origins, with our findings supporting the possibility that the invasive populations may have originated from different populations in Australia. Conclusions: We highlight the need for better understanding of the distribution, genetic ersity, and reproductive mode of the species within Australia. The variety of climatic niches occupied by invasive lineages of the wasp potentially present new threats to eucalypts in previously uninfested habitats.

Abstract: Gossia (Myrtaceae) is a highly restricted tree genus most speciose in New Caledonia and eastern Australia. The latter group accumulates above-normal foliar manganese (Mn) concentrations, with some in iduals exhibiting the rare Mn-hyperaccumulative trait. Whether foliar metals contribute to chemical defence has been addressed via numerous feeding experiments and very few field studies. This investigation exploited specifically different insect activities on the foliage of sympatric Gossia grayi (N.Snow & Guymer) and Gossia shepherdii (F.Muell.) N.Snow & Guymer, endemic to north-eastern Australia, to test for direct and indirect effects of foliar Mn enrichment on plant–insect interactions. Leaf organic and inorganic chemistries, specific weight, surface damage, gall infestation and occupancy were quantified. Discovery that both species are Mn hyperaccumulators augments the world listing by 5–7%. Highly elevated gall-Mn concentrations coupled with negligible gall parasitisation suggested chemical fortification and adaptation by the host insect – a Cecidomyiidae fly. Linear mixed modelling (LMM) showed differences in leaf Mn, phenolics, toughness and surface damage across tree species and leaf age. There was no direct relationship between leaf Mn and insect impact. However, LMM did resolve indirect effects, i.e. between insect impact and certain foliar elements, consistent with nutritional dynamics in a physiologically novel plant system where Mn is vastly overaccumulated.

Abstract: Coevolution between insects and bacterial endosymbionts contributes to the success of many insect lineages. For the first time, we tested for phylogenetic co ergence across multiple taxonomic scales, from within genera to superfamily between 36 psyllid species of seven recognised families (Hemiptera: Psylloidea), their exclusive primary endosymbiont Carsonella and more erse secondary endosymbionts (S-endosymbionts). Within Aphalaridae, we found that Carsonella and S-endosymbionts were fixed in one Glycaspis and 12 Cardiaspina populations. The dominant S-endosymbiont was Arsenophonus, while Sodalis was detected in one Cardiaspina species. We demonstrated vertical transmission for Carsonella and Arsenophonus in three Cardiaspina species. We found strong support for strict cospeciation and validated the informative content of Carsonella as extended host genome for inference of psyllid relationships. However, S-endosymbiont and host phylogenies were incongruent, and displayed signs of host switching and endosymbiont replacement. The high incidence of Arsenophonus in psyllids and other plant sap-feeding Hemiptera may be due to repeated host switching within this group. In two psyllid lineages, Arsenophonus and Sodalis genes exhibited accelerated evolutionary rates and AT-biases characteristic of long-term host associations. Together with strict vertical transmission and 100% prevalence within host populations, our results suggest an obligate, and not facultative, symbiosis between psyllids and some S-endosymbionts.

Randomized Trial of a Hospital-Based Exercise Training Program After Acute Myocardial Infarction: Cardiac Autonomic Effects

Abstract: This study sought to determine whether a moderate intensity supervised exercise training program, performed immediately after an uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction, improves recovery in cardiac autonomic function compared with standard advice about activity at home. Exercise training has beneficial effects on cardiac autonomic function and may improve prognosis after acute myocardial infarction. Thirty-nine male and 10 female patients, mean (+/-SE) age 57 +/- 1 years, with an uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction were randomized to either a 6-week moderate intensity supervised hospital-based exercise training program (exercise group) or to an unsupervised low intensity home walking program (control group). Outcome measures included changes in baroreflex sensitivity (phenylephrine bolus method) and heart rate variability (24-h Holter monitoring) and the endurance time at 85% of peak oxygen consumption. At baseline, there were no significant differences in left ventricular ejection fraction (57 +/- 2% vs. 53 +/- 2%), frequency of anterior infarction (27% vs. 18%) and peak creatine kinase (1,256 +/- 170 vs. 2,599 +/- 295 IU) between the exercise and control groups. Baroreflex sensitivity (10.5 +/- 1.0 vs. 8.4 +/- 1.2 ms/mm Hg) and time domain measures of heart rate variability were also similar. After completion of the program, the exercise group exercised for a median of 15 min (interquartile range 12 to 25) at a workload of 104 +/- 7 W compared with 7 min (interquartile range 3.5 to 12) at a workload of 89 +/- 8 W in the control group (p < 0.01). There were significant (p 0.1). A hospital-based exercise training program increased endurance capacity but did not improve recovery of cardiovascular antonomic function after uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction.
Monoterpenes and Epicuticular Waxes Help Female Autumn Gum Moth Differentiate Between Waxy and Glossy Eucalyptus and Leaves of Different Ages

Abstract: The autumn gum moth, Mnes ela privata, is a native Australian species whose preferred host, Eucalyptus globulus (Myrtaceae), is an aromatic evergreen tree that has long-lived waxy leaves during the juvenile phase of growth. We compared the behavioral and antennal responses of female moths to whole leaves (new and old) and s les of foliar chemicals (from new and old leaves) from a typical E. globulus subsp. pseudoglobulus with responses to a glossy, half-sibling E. g. subsp. pseudoglobulus putative hybrid (the result of natural cross-pollination). We also studied larval survival and development on leaves from the same trees. In laboratory binary-choice assays, female M. privata laid more eggs on waxy leaves than on glossy leaves thereby confirming the nonpreference for the glossy tree that was observed in the field. Analyses of the monoterpenes and waxes of both trees revealed that they had comparable suites of monoterpenes and total oil contents but different suites of epicuticular waxes. Headspace extracts differed in the intensity of component monoterpenes. Gas chromatographic analyses with electroantennographic detection showed different patterns of monoterpene detection. Leaves of the glossy tree had a less erse array of epicuticular waxes than those of the waxy tree. Electroantennographic screening of responses to wax extracts from leaves (new and old) from either tree revealed positive dose-dependent responses of female antennae to waxes from new leaves only. Binary-choice assays also revealed a strong preference by ovipositing females for new, compared to old, leaves whether they were from the waxy or the glossy tree. However, new leaves from either tree could be manipulated (by physical abrasion of epicuticular waxes) so that females would lay almost no eggs on them. Larval survival did not differ between groups reared on leaves from both trees (new and old). Over 70% of all larvae survived to pupation. However, larvae reared on leaves from the glossy tree took longer to pupate than those reared on leaves from the waxy tree. Also, larvae reared on new leaves from either tree did not perform as well as those reared on old leaves. Monoterpene and wax cues are suggested as helping female M. privata locate preferred hosts in native forests.

Abstract: 1. Trees present herbivorous insects with the greatest ersity of resources of any plant growth form. Both ontogeny and shading can alter suitability for arboreal insect herbivores. 2. We conducted a longitudinal study of tagged ‘mature’ ( months old) Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves to compare the suitability of understorey and canopy trees for the leaf senescence‐inducing psyllid, Cardiaspina albitextura . We quantified sugars and tannins as possible predictors of nymphal abundance. 3. Canopy leaves hosted double the number of nymphs as understorey leaves. Variation among in idual trees (understorey and canopy) was the most important source of heterogeneity explaining psyllid abundance, although relative leaf age significantly influenced oviposition on canopy leaves. The ersity of foliar sugars was higher among canopy leaves than among understorey leaves. There was significant between‐tree ersity in total hydrolysable tannins (HTs) and total condensed tannins (CTs) among understorey trees but not among canopy trees. Heterogeneity among understorey and canopy trees was explained by greater ersity of ellagitannins (HTs) than of CTs. 4. Shading is detrimental to the survival of nymphs on both host types, but sugars are unlikely to explain variation in suitability. Vescalagin (an ellagitannin) was negatively correlated with the abundance of nymphs on both host types.

Abstract: Eucalyptus species, native to Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Guinea, are the most widely planted hardwood timber species in the world. The trees, moved around the globe as seeds, escaped the erse community of herbivores found in their native range. However, a number of herbivore species from the native range of eucalypts have invaded many Eucalyptus-growing regions in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America in the last 30 years. In addition, there have been shifts of native species, particularly in Africa, Asia, and South America, onto Eucalyptus. There are risks that these species as well as generalist herbivores from other parts of the world will invade Australia and threaten the trees in their native range. The risk to Eucalyptus plantations in Australia is further compounded by planting commercially important species outside their endemic range and shifting of local herbivore populations onto new host trees. Understanding the mechanisms underlying host specificity of Australian insects can provide insight into patterns of host range expansion of both native and exotic insects.

Abstract: With the ratification of the Sustainable Development Goals, there is an increased emphasis on early childhood development (ECD) and well-being. The WHO led Global Scales for Early Development (GSED) project aims to provide population and programmatic level measures of ECD for 0–3 years that are valid, reliable and have psychometrically stable performance across geographical, cultural and language contexts. This paper reports on the creation of two measures: (1) the GSED Short Form (GSED-SF)—a caregiver reported measure for population-evaluation—self-administered with no training required and (2) the GSED Long Form (GSED-LF)—a directly administered/observed measure for programmatic evaluation—administered by a trained professional. We selected 807 psychometrically best-performing items using a Rasch measurement model from an ECD measurement databank which comprised 66 075 children assessed on 2211 items from 18 ECD measures in 32 countries. From 766 of these items, in-depth subject matter expert judgements were gathered to inform final item selection. Specifically collected were data on (1) conceptual matches between pairs of items originating from different measures, (2) developmental domain(s) measured by each item and (3) perceptions of feasibility of administration of each item in erse contexts. Prototypes were finalised through a combination of psychometric performance evaluation and expert consensus to optimally identify items. We created the GSED-SF (139 items) and GSED-LF (157 items) for tablet-based and paper-based assessments, with an optimal set of items that fit the Rasch model, met subject matter expert criteria, avoided conceptual overlap, covered multiple domains of child development and were feasible to implement across erse settings. State-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative procedures were used to select of theoretically relevant and globally feasible items representing child development for children aged 0–3 years. GSED-SF and GSED-LF will be piloted and validated in children across erse cultural, demographic, social and language contexts for global use.

Abstract: Certain crops depend upon pollination services for fruit set, and, of these, almonds are of high value for Australia. Stressors, such as diseases, parasites, pesticides, and nutrition, can contribute to honey bee Apis mellifera L. colony decline, thereby reducing bee activity and pollination efficiency. In Australia, field studies are required to monitor honey bee health and to ascertain whether factors associated with colony decline are impacting hives. We monitored honey bee colonies during and after pollination services of almond. Video surveillance technology was used to quantify bee activity, and bee-collected pollen was periodically tested for pesticide residues. Plant species ersity was also assessed using DNA metabarcoding of the pollen. Results showed that bee activity increased in almond but not in bushland. Residues detected included four fungicides, although the quantities were of low risk of oral toxicity to bees. Floral ersity was lower in the pollen collected by bees from almonds compared to bushland. However, ersity was higher at the onset and conclusion of the almond bloom, suggesting that bees foraged more widely when availability was low. Our findings suggest that commercial almond orchards may sustain healthier bee colonies compared to bushland in early spring, although the magnitude of the benefit is likely landscape-dependent.
Niche differentiation of bacterial communities at a millimeter scale in Shark Bay microbial mats

Abstract: Modern microbial mats can provide key insights into early Earth ecosystems and Shark Bay, Australia, holds one of the best ex les of these systems. Identifying the spatial distribution of microorganisms with mat depth facilitates a greater understanding of specific niches and potentially novel microbial interactions. High throughput sequencing coupled with elemental analyses and biogeochemical measurements of two distinct mat types (smooth and pustular) at a millimeter scale were undertaken in the present study. A total of 8,263,982 16S rRNA gene sequences were obtained, which were affiliated to 58 bacterial and candidate phyla. The surface of both mats were dominated by Cyanobacteria, accompanied with known or putative members of Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. The deeper anoxic layers of smooth mats were dominated by Chloroflexi, while Alphaproteobacteria dominated the lower layers of pustular mats. In situ microelectrode measurements revealed smooth mats have a steeper profile of O 2 and H 2 S concentrations, as well as higher oxygen production, consumption and sulfate reduction rates. Specific elements (Mo, Mg, Mn, Fe, V, P) could be correlated with specific mat types and putative phylogenetic groups. Models are proposed for these systems suggesting putative surface anoxic niches, differential nitrogen fixing niches and those coupled with methane metabolism.
Host assessment and feeding behaviour of adult female Glycaspis brimblecombei on preferred and non‐preferred eucalypts

Abstract: Insect herbivores assess plants by integrating responses elicited by a variety of external and internal cues and signals mediated by physical and chemical traits. We investigated host assessment behaviours of adult females of the Eucalyptus ‐feeding psyllid, Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), on 10 species and subspecies (comprising preferred and non‐preferred hosts) using video recordings, electrical penetration graph (EPG) technology, and histological examination of tissues surrounding secondary veins. Our video recordings indicated that the shortest first searching time (mean 7.5 s) occurred on preferred hosts. Females placed on novel (non‐preferred) hosts jumped off leaves in s. We found that host acceptance occurred surprisingly rapidly after stylet penetration, e.g., between 7 and 11 s on preferred eucalypts, suggesting a strong role for gustatory cues. Our histological studies provided no evidence of physical barriers to phloem access. Females produced eight EPG waveforms, as observed for other psyllids and aphids, but the durations of PG (xylem activity) and PE2 (phloem ingestion), in particular, were unlike those recorded for any other hemipteran. On preferred hosts, phloem ingestion represented 21.5% (mean duration 4 h 18 min) of in idual feeding bouts, whereas on non‐preferred hosts, there was almost no ingestion from phloem. Xylem ingestion on non‐preferred hosts represented 20.1% (mean duration 4 h 1 min) of feeding bouts, presumably to imbibe water. Thus, contrary to widespread belief, female G. brimblecombei did not feed exclusively from phloem even on preferred hosts, but also regularly ingested from the xylem. This is surprising considering that nymphs construct lerps consisting of approximately 16% sugars, and suggests that adults feed from phloem for shorter periods than offspring. Rapid assessment of hosts could also mean that positive stimuli induced by sugars are opposed by negative gustatory stimuli experienced in non‐vascular tissues. The most likely source of such stimuli are water‐soluble polyphenolic compounds that are widespread in cell vacuoles.

Abstract: The blue gum psyllid, Ctenarytaina eucalypti (Sternorrhyncha: Psyllidae), is an economic threat to Eucalyptus subgenus Symphyomyrtus plantations worldwide. To date, no generally applicable control method is available and the potential for semiochemical-based monitoring or control methods has not yet been investigated. Hence, we conducted the first study on the olfactory sense of C. eucalypti, investigating the specificity and sensitivity of its olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) to host plant volatiles using single sensillum recordings (SSR). Synthetic compounds were selected from published identifications of Eucalyptus volatiles and after analysis of headspace collections from Eucalyptus cordata. The antenna of C. eucalypti carries four cavities containing olfactory sensilla (S1-S4). Our recordings revealed that each of these sensilla houses three OSNs that could be distinguished electrophysiologically based on spike litude differences (A, B, and C neuron with large, intermediate, and small litude, respectively). The A neuron in sensillum S1 responded primarily to β-caryophyllene and weaker to β-ocimene, whereas the accompanying B-neuron responded strongly and very specifically to linalool. Furthermore, the B-neuron in both S2 and S3 responded strongly to 1-hexanol, Z3-hexenol, and Z3-hexenyl acetate. OSNs in S4 responded only weakly to a few of the synthetic compounds. Response thresholds in strongly responding OSNs to putative key compounds were close to the 1ng dose on the filter paper and responses exhibited a phasic-tonic profile irrespective of compound dose. C. eucalypti may use the physiologically active compounds for long-range host finding. Future laboratory and field experiments will reveal whether plant volatiles can be used in the management and monitoring of C. eucalypti.

Abstract: Linking demographic and genetic dispersal measures is of fundamental importance for movement ecology and evolution. However, such integration can be difficult, particularly for highly fecund species that are often the target of management decisions guided by an understanding of population movement. Here, we present an ex le of how the influence of large population sizes can preclude genetic approaches from assessing demographic population structuring, even at a continental scale. The Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera , is a significant pest, with populations on the eastern and western sides of Australia having been monitored and managed independently to date. We used microsatellites to assess genetic variation in 12 C. terminifera population s les separated by up to 3000 km. Traditional summary statistics indicated high levels of genetic ersity and a surprising lack of population structure across the entire range. An approximate Bayesian computation treatment indicated that levels of genetic ersity in C. terminifera corresponded to effective population sizes conservatively composed of tens of thousands to several million in iduals. We used these estimates and computer simulations to estimate the minimum rate of dispersal, m , that could account for the observed range-wide genetic homogeneity. The rate of dispersal between both sides of the Australian continent could be several orders of magnitude lower than that typically considered as required for the demographic connectivity of populations.

Abstract: Knowledge of the factors affecting host selection by herbivorous insects is essential to predictions of their distribution and abundance over landscapes. In the laboratory, we studied the oviposition preferences of two eruptive loopers (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) native to western Canada (western hemlock looper, Lambdina fiscellaria lugubrosa (Hulst), and phantom hemlock looper, Nepytia phantasmaria (Strecker)) for different species and condition of hosts. When offered a choice, phantom hemlock loopers laid nearly three times as many eggs on western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg. (Pinaceae) as on either western redcedar, Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don (Cupressaceae) or western white pine, Pinus monticola Douglas ex D. Don (Pinaceae). Western hemlock loopers were less specific, laying equal numbers of eggs on western hemlock and western redcedar, though fewer eggs were deposited on western white pine when compared with western hemlock. When offered western hemlock trees grown under different nutrient and shading regimes, phantom hemlock loopers preferred to oviposit on high nutrient hosts, irrespective of shading western hemlock loopers exhibited a preference for high-nutrient hosts only if they were grown without shading. These patterns of host preference can be combined with information regarding forest composition to help quantify the conditional probability of western and phantom hemlock looper distibution and abundance.

Abstract: Insects have evolved morphological and physiological adaptations in response to selection pressures inherent to their ecology. Consequently, visual performances and acuity often significantly vary between different insect species. Whilst psychophysics has allowed for the accurate determination of visual acuity for some Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, very little is known about other insect taxa that cannot be trained to positively respond to a given stimulus. In this study, we demonstrate that prior knowledge of insect colour preferences can be used to facilitate acuity testing. We focus on four psyllid species (Hemiptera: Psylloidea: Aphalaridae), namely Ctenarytaina eucalypti, C. bipartita, Anoeconeossa bundoorensis and Glycaspis brimblecombei, that differ in their colour preferences and utilization of different host-plant modules (e.g. apical buds, stems, leaf lamellae) and test their visual acuity in a modified Y-maze adapted to suit psyllid searching behaviour. Our study reveals that psyllids have visual acuity ranging from 6.3° to 8.7°. Morphological measurements for different species revealed a close match between inter-ommatidial angles and behaviourally determined visual angles (between 5.5°and 6.6°) suggesting detection of colour stimuli at the single ommatidium level. Whilst our data support isometric scaling of psyllids eyes for C. eucalypti, C. bipartita and G. brimblecombei, a morphological trade-off between light sensitivity and spatial resolution was found in A. bundoorensis. Overall, species whose microhabitat preferences require more movement between modules appear to possess superior visual acuities. The psyllid searching behaviours that we describe with the help of tracking software depict species-specific strategies presumably evolved to optimize searching for food and oviposition sites.

Abstract: Mating is preceded by a series of interdependent events that can be broadly categorized into searching and courtship. Long-range signals convey species- and sex-specific information during searching, while short-range signals provide information specific to in iduals during courtship. Studies have shown that cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) can be used for mate recognition in addition to protecting insects from desiccation. In Psylloidea, four species rely on semiochemicals for long-range mate attraction. Psyllid mating research has focused on long-range mate attraction and has largely ignored the potential use of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) as mate recognition cues. This study investigated whether CHCs of Aacanthocnema dobsoni have semiochemical activity for long- and short-range communication prior to mating. Using a solid s ler for solvent-less injection of whole psyllids into coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, we found quantitative, sex- and age-related differences in CHC profiles. Males had higher proportions of 2-MeC28, 11,15-diMeC29, and n-C33 alkanes, while females had higher proportions of 5-MeC27, 3-MeC27, 5,15-diMeC27, n-C29 and n-C30 alkanes. In males and females, 84 and 68 % of CHCs varied with age, respectively. Y-tube olfactometer bioassays provided no evidence that males or females responded to odors emanating from groups of conspecifics of the opposite sex. Tests of male and female psyllids for attraction to branchlets previously occupied by conspecifics showed no evidence of attraction to possible semiochemical residues. Our short-range chemoreception bioassay showed that males were as indifferent to freshly killed in iduals of either sex with intact CHC profiles as to those treated with hexane (to remove CHCs). Aacanthocnema dobsoni utilizes substrate-borne vibrations (SBVs) for communication. Therefore, our results indicate that SBVs are probably more important than semiochemicals for long-range mate attraction. Furthermore, CHCs are unlikely to mediate short-range mate recognition or provide mate assessment cues.

Abstract: Few population genetics studies have been carried out on major locust species. In particular, an understanding of the population genetic structure of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, is lacking. We isolated and characterized eight polymorphic microsatellite loci in C. terminifera, and described experimental conditions for polymerase chain reaction multiplexing and genotyping these loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 11 to 29 and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.797 to 0.977. One locus was found to be X-linked. Results of cross-taxon lification tests are reported in four species of the Oedipodinae subfamily.

Abstract: The autumn gum moth, Mnes ela privata, utilizes several species of Eucalyptus planted outside regions of endemism within Australia. We investigated whether foliar monoterpene composition influenced oviposition in the field on the natural primary host (E. globulus) and a novel host (E. rubida), both characterized by nonstructural epicuticular waxes. In the laboratory, oviposition preferences of females for species and families of known host, novel hosts, and non-hosts that were characterized by both nonstructural and structural waxes but also varied in foliar concentrations of the purportedly toxic plant secondary metabolite (sideroxylonal) were studied. Although M. privata laid as many eggs on trees of two families of E. rubida as they did on trees of two families of E. globulus, there were significant differences in the numbers of clutches of eggs laid. When combined with data for oviposition on another five families of E. globulus, we found a negative relationship between mean numbers of eggs and foliar concentration of alpha-pinene but a positive relationship between egg numbers and the concentration of alpha-terpineol. The field data suggest that female M. privata are just as willing to lay eggs on novel hosts with comparable foliar monoterpene compositions to those of the primary host, especially if they produce nonstructural epicuticular waxes. Oviposition assays in the laboratory endorse this mechanism of host plant hierarchy and support the long-held assumption of the host primacy of E. globulus. In laboratory assays, some larvae pupated on all hosts (except Corymbia eximia) but the number completing larval development was greater on hosts with softer leaves. Larval survival was also reduced on hosts with high concentrations of sideroxylonal but only if those hosts also had modest to high concentrations of monoterpenes. Larval survival was high on a host (E. macarthurii) with a high concentration of sideroxylonal but with virtually zero monoterpene content. This suggests that the monoterpene content of a host could antagonize the effect on M. privata larvae of its sideroxylonal content. The larval food plant most affected the fitness of female rather than male pupae. Of the known host expansion events, all have occurred in mixed species plantations. The co-occurrence in these plantations of either the primary host or other highly ranked species probably explains the eventual expansion onto the neighboring species of Eucalyptus and Corymbia.

Abstract: Ctenarytaina bipartita sp.n., associated with Eucalyptus kitsoniana and E. viminalis, is described from the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria. It differs from other described Ctenarytaina species in the paramere which bears a small posterior lobe. Taxonomically relevant morphological details are illustrated and the species is diagnosed from other eucalypt inhabiting congeners. Information on the biology is also given. C. bipartita has the po-tential to become an exported pest species to countries with significant eucalypt plantations.

Abstract: Psyllids (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) are small sucking insects with high host plant specificity. Despite the primitive olfactory system of psyllids, some species have been suggested to rely on host plant volatiles (HPVs) for seasonal migration between summer deciduous hosts and winter coniferous hosts. Similarly, enhanced attraction of psyllid vectors has been observed as a result of the manipulation of host odors by plant pathogens. As yet, there are no studies of olfaction in psyllids that utilize evergreen eucalypt hosts. We investigated the behavioral responses of adults of four Eucalyptus-feeding psyllids—Ctenarytaina eucalypti, C. bipartita, Anoeconeossa bundoorensis and Glycaspis brimblecombei—to their respective HPVs in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. We also used existing physiological data for C. eucalypti to investigate potential olfactory tuning that may modulate the preference for morphologically juvenile leaves over morphologically adult leaves. Although adult C. eucalypti were consistently repelled by HPVs from damaged host leaves, none of the species exhibited positive chemotaxis to HPVs from undamaged leaves. Surprisingly, G. brimblecombei was repelled by HPVs from undamaged host leaves. Our findings provide little support for a significant role of olfaction in host location by Eucalyptus-feeding psyllids. We propose a number of ecological hypotheses to explain these unexpected findings.

Abstract: Our knowledge of the composition of the waxes on the surfaces of Eucalyptus leaves is growing but that of plant primary metabolites has been completely overlooked. The diffusion of primary metabolites above the cuticle exposes them to a variety of herbivorous taxa and has the potential to influence their responses to that plant. Juvenile leaves of two families of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. ssp. globulus and two families of E. nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden had 11 out of 16 of the epicuticular waxes that were detected in common. However, two phenylethyl esters (waxes) were only detected on leaves of one family of E. globulus and two benzyl esters (waxes) were not detected or were uncommon in s les from E. nitens. Wax compounds were generally found in s les from both leaf surfaces but a few were only detected in s les from particular sides. Species and families of eucalypt did not differ significantly in the concentrations of free sugars, polyols, malic acid or γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (all plant primary metabolites) collected from the surfaces of leaves. However, concentrations of all these metabolites were usually higher in collections from the upper surfaces of leaves. High wax abundance, especially on the lower surfaces of E. globulus leaves, is suspected to have hindered dissolution of all the primary metabolites quantified. Several free amino acids exhibited significant species-level differences in concentrations, namely the aromatic, amide and sulfur-containing amino acids as well as proline family-level differences in amino acid concentrations were not significant. Australian and overseas evidence showing that differences in waxes and primary metabolites can be influential in plant susceptibility to herbivorous taxa is considered with respect to the threats posed by the autumn gum moth and Mycosphaerella leaf spot fungi.

Abstract: Anoeconeossa bundoorensis sp. n. is described from Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Myrtaceae) from southern Victoria in Southeast Australia. It is placed in the A. communis Taylor species-group as the paramere lacks combs of black rods. It differs from other members of the species-group, A. communis and A. bullata Taylor as it lacks an anterobasal expansion on the paramere and from A. unicornuta Taylor as the inner horn-shaped process of the paramere is reduced to a short spine and the apical expansion is more elongate, with a corresponding greater length of equidistant setae. Taxonomically relevant morphological details are illustrated and the species is diagnosed from other eucalypt inhabiting congeners. In-formation on the biology is presented.
