Abstract: A male bilby (Macrotis lagotis) was presented to the Murdoch University Veterinary Anatomical Pathology Service following humane destruction due to severe lethargy. The bilby was emaciated with a focal ulcerated skin lesion on the dorsal tail base. Multifocal to coalescing foci of pyogranulomatous and often necrotizing inflammation was present within multiple organs, including the tail wound, adrenal glands, kidneys, lungs, brain, testes, lymph nodes, heart, liver, spleen and salivary glands. Admixed were abundant intrahistiocytic and extracellular pleomorphic yeast (round, oval and cigar-shaped) up to 6 μm diameter, often with a thin clear halo and occasional narrow-based budding. The diagnosis of disseminated sporotrichosis was confirmed via culture and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region of the causative agent, Sporothrix schenckii sensu lato. The route of entry of infection was considered most likely to have been via cutaneous inoculation of the tail base wound. To the authors' knowledge, this report describes the first known case of sporotrichosis in a native Australian animal.

Abstract: Identifying and quantifying the relative frequency of involuntary losses is an essential first step in developing fit‐for‐purpose herd health programmes. The objective of this study was to provide an estimate of the relative frequency of reasons for mortality among south‐west Western Australian beef and dairy cattle, based on necropsy findings from a university‐based veterinary pathology referral centre over 38 years. A total of 904 cattle were submitted for postmortem examination throughout the study period. Gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary and reproductive conditions were the most common causes of mortality in cattle submitted for necropsy at Murdoch University for the period 1981–2018. In dairy cattle, the common problems were gastrointestinal (bloat, abomasal displacements) 18% (59/320), cardiovascular (traumatic reticulo‐pericarditis) 9% (30/320) and respiratory conditions (pneumonia) 8% (27/320). In beef cattle, the most common conditions were gastrointestinal (bloat, rumen acidosis) 11% (39/358), reproductive (metritis) 11% (38/358), cardiovascular (traumatic reticulo‐pericarditis) 7% (25/358), respiratory (pneumonia) 7% (24/358), lameness (fractures) 6%, (21/358) and hepatobiliary conditions (blue‐green algae poisoning, hepatotoxicity) 6% (21/358). Selection bias and missing data were potential confounders in this study. Although necropsy investigations provide useful information on animal mortalities and avenues for future herd health programmes, there is a need to standardise data capture methods and disease definition criteria, and conduct more detailed recording of data both at the farm level and at necropsy diagnostic centres.

Abstract: The control of feral cats (Felis catus) in Australia is a key biological conservation issue. Male cats are more difficult to control than female cats. Collared and tagged female cats displaying estrous behavior have been considered as a way to lure male cats and reveal their locations. As female cats are seasonal breeders, artificial induction of estrous behavior following the administration of a long-acting estrogen could improve their use for this purpose. Estradiol cypionate was intramuscularly administered to nine entire non-pregnant female feral cats, of unknown estrous status, at 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5 mg/kg. Mean peak serum concentrations of estradiol-17β were 365 pg/mL (0.1 mg/kg), 1281 pg/mL (0.3 mg/kg), and 1447 pg/mL (0.5 mg/kg). The time-course of estradiol-17β concentrations after various doses of estradiol cypionate was assessed using non-compartmental and non-linear mixed-effects methods. At the highest-studied dose (0.5 mg/kg), the 50th percentile of estradiol-17β concentrations exceeded 0.1 ng/mL for 11.8 days, and 0.05 ng/mL for 14.6 days. The duration increased with increasing dose. No signs of toxicity were noticed in any cat during the study. This information will be useful to ongoing studies that are investigating ways to reduce the abundance of feral cats in Australia, especially adult male cats.

Abstract: Swine dysentery (SD) caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae is an important disease in Australia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the macrolide antibiotic kitasamycin for use in SD control. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of kitasamycin, tylosin and lincomycin for 32 Australian isolates of B. hyodysenteriae were evaluated. Mutations in the 23S rRNA gene were examined. Isolate '13' with a low kitasamycin MIC was used to challenge weaner pigs. Sixty pigs were housed in 20 pens each containing three pigs: pigs in four pens received 2 kg/tonne of a product containing kitasamycin (3.1% active) prophylactically in their food starting 4 days before B. hyodysenteriae challenge (group 1) pigs in four pens were challenged and received the same dose therapeutically once one pig in a pen showed diarrhoea (group 2) four pens were challenged and received 4 kg/tonne of the product therapeutically (group 3) four pens were challenged but not medicated (group 4) two pens were unmedicated and unchallenged (group 5) and two pens received 2 kg/tonne and were unchallenged (group 6). Pigs were monitored for B. hyodysenteriae excretion and disease. Macrolide resistance was widespread, and mutations in the 23S rRNA gene were identified in 23 isolates. Four isolates with kitasamycin MICs < 5 μg/mL were considered susceptible. Following experimental challenge, 10 of 12 unmedicated pigs developed SD. No pigs receiving kitasamycin prophylactical or therapeutically developed SD. Medicated pigs shed low numbers of B. hyodysenteriae in their faeces. Kitasamycin can help control SD in pigs infected with susceptible isolates of B. hyodysenteriae.
