A database of chlorophyll a in Australian waters

Abstract: Chlorophyll a is the most commonly used indicator of phytoplankton biomass in the marine environment. It is relatively simple and cost effective to measure when compared to phytoplankton abundance and is thus routinely included in many surveys. Here we collate 173, 333 records of chlorophyll a collected since 1965 from Australian waters gathered from researchers on regular coastal monitoring surveys and ocean voyages into a single repository. This dataset includes the chlorophyll a values as measured from s les analysed using spectrophotometry, fluorometry and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Australian Chlorophyll a database is freely available through the Australian Ocean Data Network portal ( portal.aodn.org.au/ ). These data can be used in isolation as an index of phytoplankton biomass or in combination with other data to provide insight into water quality, ecosystem state, and relationships with other trophic levels such as zooplankton or fish.

Large DOF coupler/draft gear system models for rail vehicles

Abstract: Aiming at accurate predictions of coupler/daft gear systems' dynamic behaviour. Based on the analysis of structural and kinematic relations of two typical systems, hysteretic nonlinear draft gear models and 9DOF (Degree of freedom) detailed coupler/draft gear system models were developed. Frictional pairs on coupling surfaces and coupler tails along with interactive aligning shoulder models were integrated into system models. Utilizing two detailed locomotive models simulations were performed on a section of special track to validate the rationalities of coupler/draft gear system models. Simulation results indicate that all parts in coupler/draft gear system models can fullfill their roles, and the system models themselves can reproduce the run-time behaviour of coupler/draft gear systems with high reliability and accuracy.

Partitioning of fungal assemblages across different marine habitats

Abstract: Fungi are a highly erse group of microbes that fundamentally influence the biogeochemistry of the biosphere, but we currently know little about the ersity and distribution of fungi in aquatic habitats. Here we describe shifts in marine fungal community composition across different marine habitats, using targeted pyrosequencing of the fungal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. Our results demonstrate strong partitioning of fungal community composition between estuarine, coastal and oceanic s les, with each habitat hosting discrete communities that are controlled by patterns in salinity, temperature, oxygen and nutrients. Whereas estuarine habitats comprised a significant proportion of fungal groups often found in terrestrial habitats, the open ocean sites were dominated by previously unidentified groups. The patterns observed here indicate that fungi are potentially a significant, although largely overlooked, feature of the ocean's microbiota, but greater efforts to characterize marine species are required before the full ecological and biogeochemical importance of marine fungi can be ascertained.

Development of an estuarine assessment scheme for the management of a highly urbanised catchment/estuary system, Sydney estuary, Australia

Abstract: As coastal populations increase, considerable pressures are exerted on estuarine environments. Recently, there has been a trend towards the development and use of estuarine assessment schemes as a decision support tool in the management of these environments. These schemes offer a method by which complex environmental data is converted into a readily understandable and communicable format for informed decision making and effective distribution of limited management resources. Reliability and effectiveness of these schemes are often limited due to a complex assessment framework, poor data management and use of ineffective environmental indicators. The current scheme aims to improve reliability in the reporting of estuarine condition by including a concise assessment framework, employing high-value indicators and, in a unique approach, employing fuzzy logic in indicator evaluation. Using Sydney estuary as a case study, each of the 15 sub-catchment/sub-estuary systems were assessed using the current scheme. Results identified that poor sediment quality was a significant issue in Blackwattle/Rozelle Bay, Iron Cove and Hen and Chicken Bay while poor water quality was of particular concern in Duck River, Homebush Bay and the Parramatta River. Overall results of the assessment scheme were used to prioritise the management of each sub-catchment/sub-estuary assessed with Blackwattle/Rozelle Bay, Homebush Bay, Iron Cove and Duck River considered to be in need of a high priority management response. A report card format, using letter grades, was employed to convey the results of the assessment in a readily understood manner to estuarine managers and members of the public. Letter grades also provide benchmarking and performance monitoring ability, allowing estuarine managers to set improvement targets and assesses the effectiveness of management strategies. The current assessment scheme provides an effective, integrated and consistent assessment of estuarine health and provides an effective decision support tool to maximise the efficient distribution of limited management resources.

The curving behaviour of heavy-haul locomotive couplers

Abstract: Two types of typical heavy-haul locomotive coupler models were presented, one is round-pin coupler with shoulder-limit, and another is flat-pin coupler with frictional tail pairs and stop-limit, both of them adapting nonlinear hysteresis buffer models. Utilizing a train model consists of 2 detailed locomotives and 1 simplified freight wagon, curving behaviour of different couplers were studied. The results show that, the actual curving behaviour of different couplers could be accurately simulated by the established coupler dynamics models. This paper will play a promoting role for analyzing actual heavy-haul locomotive running behaviours and safety.

Detrainment Dominates CCN Concentrations Around Non‐Precipitating Convective Clouds Over the Amazon

Abstract: We investigated the relationship between the number concentration of cloud droplets ( N d ) in ice‐free convective clouds and of particles large enough to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measured at the lateral boundaries of cloud elements. The data were collected during the ACRIDICON‐CHUVA aircraft c aign over the Amazon Basin. The results indicate that the CCN particles at the lateral cloud boundaries are dominated by detrainment from the cloud. The CCN concentrations detrained from non‐precipitating convective clouds are smaller compared to below cloud bases. The detrained CCN particles from precipitating cloud volumes have relatively larger sizes, but lower concentrations. Our findings indicate that CCN particles ingested from below cloud bases are activated into cloud droplets, which evaporate at the lateral boundaries and above cloud base and release the CCN again to ambient cloud‐free air, after some cloud processing. These results support the hypothesis that the CCN around the cloud are cloud‐processed.
