Insulating Composites Made from Sulfur, Canola Oil, and Wool**

Abstract: An insulating composite was made from the sustainable building blocks wool, sulfur, and canola oil. In the first stage of the synthesis, inverse vulcanization was used to make a polysulfide polymer from the canola oil triglyceride and sulfur. This polymerization benefits from complete atom economy. In the second stage, the powdered polymer was mixed with wool, coating the fibers through electrostatic attraction. The polymer and wool mixture were then compressed with mild heating to provoke S−S metathesis in the polymer, which locks the wool in the polymer matrix. The wool fibers imparted tensile strength, insulating properties, and reduced the flammability of the composite. All building blocks are sustainable or derived from waste and the composite is a promising lead on next‐generation insulation for energy conservation.

Correlation of Changes in Electronic and Device Properties in Organic Photovoltaic with Exposure to Air

Abstract: In polymer‐based organic photovoltaic cells, the capability of charge extraction/injection of molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3 ) is demonstrated as interface layer for polymer bulk heterojunction (BHJ). The present work determines the dipole formed at the MoO 3 and conjugated poly [2,3‐bis (3‐octyloxyphenyl) quinoxaline‐5,8‐diyl‐alt‐thiophene‐2,5‐diyl] (TQ1):(6,6)‐Phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC 71 BM) bulk heterojunction interface. This dipole has a major influence on the charge transport across the TQ1:PC 71 BM interface. The formation of the dipole is determined with electron spectroscopy and the depth profiling technique neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy. Metastable induced electron and UV‐photoelectron spectroscopy is applied to determine the enclosed surface coverage of minimum 1.5 nm MoO 3 and a maximized dipole strength of 2.4 eV with nm MoO 3 deposition on BHJ. It is also demonstrated that the air exposure reduces the dipole at the interface and leads to a decrease in cell performance providing evidence that the dipole formed at the interface is beneficial for the functioning of photovoltaic cells. The results indicate that the reduction in dipole might not be the only mechanism leading to cell performance degradation. The findings of the present work have relevance for other BHJ systems because MoO 3 as high work function material is likely to interact with other organic materials in a similar way.
Role of humidity on indium and tin migration in organic photovoltaic devices

Abstract: The stability of a common interface used in organic photovoltaic cells, between the transparent electrode of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) and a buffer layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is strongly influenced by the presence of humidity during processing, leading to significant migration of indium and tin species into the PEDOT:PSS layer. The interface was studied using neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (NICISS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), to determine migration of indium and tin into the polymer layer. It was found that the migration starts almost instantly after spin coating of the aqueous PEDOT:PSS solution and it reaches a saturation level within twenty four hours. The indium and tin were found always uniformly distributed over the s ling depth of almost one-third of the thickness of the PEDOT:PSS layer. Exposure to humidity following annealing resulted in the highest concentration (1.8 × 10(-3) mol cm(-3)) of indium or tin species, corresponding to about one indium or tin moiety per 4.7 monomer units in the PEDOT:PSS. The maximum bulk concentration of indium is about two orders of magnitude higher after exposure to humid conditions compared to vacuum dried conditions. XPS measurements confirm the presence of both indium and tin in the PEDOT:PSS and the formation of salts with the metal ions as cations.

Abstract: Sulfur is an underused by-product of the petrochemicals industry. Recent research into inverse vulcanization has shown how this excess sulfur can be transformed into functional polymers, by stabilization with organic crosslinkers. For these interesting new materials to realize their potential for applications, more understanding and control of their physical properties is needed. Here we report four new terpolymers prepared from sulfur and two distinct alkene monomers that can be predictively tuned in glass transition, molecular weight, solubility, mechanical properties, and color.

The generic enhancement of photochromic dye switching speeds in a rigid polymer matrix

Abstract: The switching or isomerization speed of photochromic dyes in a rigid polymeric matrix (such as an ophthalmic lens) is generally significantly slower than that observed in the mobile environment of a solution. Here we describe that the attachment of flexible oligomers having a low glass-transition temperature-such as poly(dimethylsiloxane)-to photochromic dyes greatly increases their switching speeds in a rigid polymer matrix. The greatest impact was observed in the thermal fade parameters T(1/2) and T(3/4)-the times it takes for the optical density to reduce by half and three quarters of the initial optical density of the coloured state-which were reduced by 40-95% and 60-99% respectively for spirooxazines, chromenes and an azo dye in a host polymer with a glass-transition temperature of 120 degrees C. The method does not alter the electronic nature of the dyes but simply protects them from the host matrix and provides greater molecular mobility for the switching process. In addition to ophthalmic lenses, the generic nature of the method may find further utility in data recording or optical switching.

Abstract: Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) is used to characterise the nanoscale electrical properties of many conducting and semiconducting materials. We investigate the effect of single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) modification of commercial Pt/Ir cantilevers on the sensitivity and image stability during C-AFM imaging. Pt/Ir cantilevers were modified with small bundles of SWCNTs via a manual attachment procedure and secured with a conductive platinum pad. AFM images of topography and current were collected from heterogeneous polymer and nanomaterial s les using both standard and SWCNT modified cantilevers. Typically, achieving a good current image comes at the cost of reduced feedback stability. In part, this is due to electrostatic interaction and increased tip wear upon applying a bias between the tip and the s le. The SWCNT modified tips displayed superior current sensitivity and feedback stability which, combined with superior wear resistance of SWCNTs, is a significant advancement for C-AFM.

Low-Temperature Processed TiOx/Zn1−xCdxS Nanocomposite for Efficient MAPbIxCl1−x Perovskite and PCDTBT:PC70BM Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract: The majority of high-performance perovskite and polymer solar cells consist of a TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL) processed at a high temperature ( °C). Here, we demonstrate that low-temperature (80 °C) ETL thin film of TiOx:Zn1−xCdxS can be used as an effective ETL and its band energy can be tuned by varying the TiOx:Zn1−xCdxS ratio. At the optimal ratio of 50:50 (vol%), the MAPbIxCl1−x perovskite and PCBTBT:PC70BM polymer solar cells achieved 9.79% and 4.95%, respectively. Morphological and optoelectronic analyses showed that tailoring band edges and homogeneous distribution of the local surface charges could improve the solar cells efficiency by more than 2%. We proposed a plausible mechanism to rationalize the variation in morphology and band energy of the ETL.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of carbon nanotubes with poly(styrene sulfonate) were investigated over a range of pH and ionic strengths as a means of determining the potential for further application of the polymer as a protective agent for the tubes. The poly(styrene sulfonate) was found to be an effective dispersal agent, capable of reducing the size of the nanotube agglomerates within an aqueous solution and dispersing the tubes in a single-step process.
Fatigue of Donor-Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts in Polymer Matrices and Solution

Abstract: The fatigue performance of a range of donor‐acceptor‐Stenhouse‐adducts (DASAs) has been investigated to identify degradation mechanisms. The dyes were found to fatigue with and without exposure to light in both solution and in films. Excluding light below about 430 nm resulted in almost complete thermal recovery after exposure, however, a range of common film additives including hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) and other additives (especially bases) were shown to react with the DASAs resulting in irreversible fatigue. The rate of fatigue was also found to increase with the relative strength of the donor and acceptor moieties in the molecule.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the relation of marine debris to gastropods in the mangrove ecosystem. This research was conducted from October to December 2019 in the Tongkaina mangrove forest. The method used in this research is the line transects method with 2 different stations. Then do the data analysis of waste density, gastropod abundance index, frequency, ersity index, uniformity, and dominance. Then, analyzing a simple linear regression and correlation is performed to see the relationship between marine debris and gastropod abundance in a mangrove ecosystem. The results showed that the highest inorganic marine debris in the Tongkeina mangrove ecosystem is plastic and followed by cloth, wood, metal and the least was glass. The species of Gastropods found in the mangrove ecosystem are Littoraria scabra, Nerita undulata and Terebralia sulcata. The highest abundance of gastropod species was found at station 2 in transects 1 by Littoraria scraba. The results of the linear regression analysis show that there is a relationship between waste and abundance of gastropods. The increasing amount of waste, lower the abundance of gastropods. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan s ah laut terhadap gastropoda di ekosistem mangrove. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan Oktober s ai Desember 2019 di hutan mangrove Tongkaina. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode line transek dengan 2 stasiun berbeda. Kemudian dilakukan analisa data kepadatan s ah, indeks kelimpaha gastropoda, frekuensi, indeks keanekaragaman, keseragaman dan dominasi. Selanjutnya dilakukan analisa regresi lineier sederhana serta korelasi untuk melihat hubungan yang terjadi antara s ah dan kelimpahan gastrooda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa s ah anorganik jenis plasik yang tertinggi di ekosistem mangrove pantai Tongkaina diikuti s ah jenis Kain, Kayu, Logam dan yang paling sedikit adalah s ah jenis kaca. Jenis gastropoda yang ditemukan di ekosistem mangrove yaitu Littoraria scabra, Nerita undulata dan Terebralia sulcata. Nilai kelimpahan jenis gastropoda tertinggi terdapat di stasiun 2 di transek 1 oleh Littoraria scraba. Hasil analisa regresi linier menunjukan bahawa ada hubungan yang terjadi antara s ah dan kelimpahan gastropoda yang dilihat dari anlisis regresi linier sederhana. Semakin meningkatnya jumlah s ah maka semakin rendah kelimpahan gastropoda. Dimana nilai korelasinya sebesar -0.20506.Kata Kunci : Korelasi S ah Laut Gastropoda Ekosistem Mangrove.

Morphology Control in a Dual-Cure System for Potential Applications in Additive Manufacturing

Abstract: The polymerisation, morphology and mechanical properties of a two-component in-situ reacting system consisting of a rubbery dimethacrylate and a rigid epoxy polymer were investigated. The methacrylate component of the mixture was photocured using UV light exposure and, in a second curing process, the mixture was thermally postcured. The polymers formed a partially miscible system with two glass transition temperature (Tg) peaks measured using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The composition and relative rate of reaction of the two orthogonal polymerisations influenced the extent of miscibility of the two polymer-rich phases and the s les were transparent, indicating that the two phases were finely dispersed. The addition of a glycidyl methacrylate compatibiliser further increased the miscibility of the two polymers. The utility of this polymer system for additive manufacturing was investigated and simulated through layer-by-layer processing of the mixture in two steps. Firstly, the methacrylate component was photocured to solidify the material into its final shape, whilst the second step of thermal curing was used to polymerise the epoxy component. With the use of a simulated photomask, a simple shape was formed using the two orthogonal polymerisation stages to produce a solid object. The mechanical properties of this two-phase system were superior to a control s le made only of the methacrylate component, indicating that some reinforcing due to polymerisation of the epoxy across the interfaces had occurred in the postcuring stage.

Abstract: The performance of organic field effect transistors using the small molecule, tri-isopropyl- silane-di-benzo chrysene (TIPS-DBC) is reported. The field effect mobility μ FE is found to depend on the deposition conditions, which affect the morphology of the film. A mobility in the range of 1.5 × 10 −6 to 2.4 × 10 −4 cm 2 V −1 s −1 is obtained from the evaporated films depending on the substrate treatment and deposition temperature, while films deposited by solution-processing techniques yield mobilities in the range of 0.7 × 10 −3 to 1.5 × 10 −3 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . The enhanced performance in polycrystalline solution-processed coatings and its relationship to crystallite size is an important parameter in the design of high-performance devices based on small molecules.

Stability of Polymer Interlayer Modified ITO Electrodes for Organic Solar Cells

Abstract: Indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrode surfaces were modified using thin polymeric films of ethoxylated polyethylenimine (PEIE) and poly(3,3′-([(9′,9′-dioctyl-9H,9′H-[2,2′-bifluorene]-9,9-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene)]bis(oxy))bis(N,N-dimethylpropan-1-amine)) (PFPA-1) to investigate the resultant work function and its stability in ambient atmosphere. Both PEIE and PFPA-1 were found to significantly reduce the ITO work function, as a result of a surface dipole at the ITO–polymer interface. After aging for two weeks in ambient air atmosphere, the N-side groups and OH groups in PEIE-modified ITO were found to realign themselves away from the polymer surface, resulting in an orientation more parallel to the surface normal and thus in an increase in work function from 3.5 to 3.8 eV. The work function of PFPA-1-modified ITO was found to increase from 3.65 to 4.1 eV after two weeks of aging in air due to a complete re-orientation of the polar side chains away from the surface, aligning the dipoles more parallel to the surface normal. In both PEIE and PFPA-1 s les, the hydrophobic aliphatic carbon was found to dominate the polymer surface, after aging.

While the surface roughness created by varying the particle size did not appear to affect water contact angles, the sliding angles showed a significant monotonic decrease, reducing from 90° to 20°.

Abstract: Narrow dispersity polymers with a high tethered fullerene content were synthesised by first polymerising poly(chloromethyl styrene) using reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation and subsequently functionalising them with pristine fullerene. The polymers comprised 52 % by weight fullerene, corresponding to approximately one fullerene per monomer in the polymer with a different morphology to poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) : phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) systems. Bulk heterojunctions formed from the polymer tethered fullerene (PTF) with P3HT yielded functioning organic photovoltaic devices with power conversion efficiencies ranging from 0.0030 to 0.22 % as the PTF was increased from 1 : 0.8 to 1 : 1.3. Process optimisation resulted in a maximum efficiency of 0.4 %.

Photochromic performance of Donor-Acceptor-Stenhouse-Adducts in Polymer Binders and Solution

Abstract: Donor‐acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are an exciting new class of negative photochromic compounds, offering high colouration and rapid photo‐switching speeds, however the relationship between binder properties and photo‐switching behaviour of DASAs in films is poorly understood. The determination and analysis of rate constants of seven DASAs in five polymer binders showed a complex relationship between the glass transition temperature ( T g ) of the binder, the solubility parameters of the matrix and the push‐pull nature of the donor and acceptor moieties. The rate constants of photo‐switching steps that require large degrees of molecular motion such as the actinic and thermal carbon‐carbon double bond rotations (k bleach and k −1 ) were found to be highly dependent on the T g of the polymer binder, with higher T g binders restricting these processes, resulting in slower switching rates and impacting changes in colour intensity. Correlation of rate constants with the Hansen solubility parameter for solvents and binders revealed strong relationships between the sum of the polarity and hydrogen bonding parameters (δP+δH) and the actinic and thermal carbon‐carbon double bond rotations (k bleach and k −1 ). This is attributed to changes in the zwitterionic resonance contributions of the triene with increases in these two solubility parameters.
