Understanding the difference in softness of Australian Soft Rolling Skin wool and conventional Merino wool

Abstract: Softness is one of the key elements of textile comfort and is one of the main considerations when consumers make purchasing decisions. In the wool industry, softness can reflect the quality and value of wool fibers. There is verifiable difference in subjective softness between Australian Soft Rolling Skin (SRS) wool and conventional Merino (CM) wool, yet the key factors responsible for this difference are not yet well understood. Fiber attributes, such as crimp (curvature), scale morphology, ortho-to-cortex (OtC) ratio and moisture regain, may have a significant influence on softness performance. This study has examined these key factors for both SRS and CM wool and systematically compared the difference in these factors. There was no significant difference in the crimp frequency between these two wools however, the curvature of SRS wool was lower than that of CM wool within the same fiber diameter ranges (below 14.5 micron, 16.5–18.5 micron). This difference might be caused by the lower OtC ratio for SRS wool (approximately 0.60) than for CM wool (approximately 0.66). The crystallinity of the two wools was similar and not affected by the change in OtC ratio. SRS wool has higher moisture regain than CM wool by approximately 2.5%, which could reduce the stiffness of wool fibers. The surface morphology for SRS wool was also different from that of CM wool. The lower cuticle scale height for SRS wool resulted in its smoother surface than CM wool. This cuticle height difference was present even when they both had similar cuticle scale frequency.

Sustainable Free‐Standing Electrode from Biomass Waste for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract: Battery sustainability is often neglected in favor of higher performance and economic efficiency in battery technology. The standard electrode containing the use of binder and toxic solvent has a detrimental impact on the environment. For the first time, a sustainable and free‐standing carbonized silk battery anode is prepared from woven silk biomass waste. The unique mechanical structural properties and surface functionality make this material not only avoid the use of binder and organic solvent, but with the possibility of achieving high energy density batteries. An outstanding initial Coulombic efficiency of 75.6 % and a remarkable capacity retention of 100 % after 100 cycles are achieved for the electrode carbonized at 1300 °C (CS_1300 °C) when using a non‐volatile and non‐flammable superconcentrated ionic liquid electrolyte. A uniformly NaF‐distributed solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is produced on the CS_1300 °C surface to facilitate Na + transfer kinetics, and high capacity utilization. Surface functional groups are elucidated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), while density functional theory calculations reveal that these groups accelerate fast Na + ion adsorption on the surface, but hinder Na + intercalation kinetics due to the strong binding energy from the sodiophilic sites. This scalable and cost‐efficient strategy opens up a new avenue for mass‐production of battery anode materials, and proposes an argument for the role of surface functional groups in SEI formation and electrochemical performance.

Abstract: Electrocatalysts used for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions are critical materials in many renewable-energy devices, such as rechargeable metal-air batteries, regenerative fuel cells, and water-splitting systems. Compared with conventional electrodes made from catalyst powders, oxygen electrodes with a freestanding architecture are highly desirable because of their binder-free fabrication and effective elimination of catalyst agglomeration. Among all freestanding electrode structures that have been investigated so far, fibrous materials exhibit many unique advantages, such as a wide range of available fibers, low material and material-processing costs, large specific surface area, highly porous structure, and simplicity of fiber functionalization. Recent advances in the use of fibrous structures for freestanding electrocatalytic oxygen electrodes are summarized, including electrospun nanofibers, bacterial cellulose, cellulose fibrous structures, carbon clothes apers, metal nanowires, and metal meshes. After detailed discussion of common techniques for oxygen electrode evaluation, freestanding electrode fabrication, and their electrocatalytic performance, current challenges and future prospects are also presented for future development.

A modified resistance to compression (RtC) test for evaluation of natural fiber softness

Abstract: Comfort is a key feature of any clothing that relates significantly to softness of the fiber, yarn and fabric from which is it constructed. A known softness assessment method for fibers is the resistance to compression test. This traditional test only provides a single force value for the resistance of a loose fiber s le using a fixed mass under compression. In this research, a modified resistance to compression test was introduced to show the effects of repeated compression, providing more information about the softness and resilience of selected fibers. Three different natural fiber types, including wool, cotton and alpaca were compared using this new approach. The results showed compression profiles were quite different for different fiber types as well as for the same fibers with different diameters. While the diameters of the wool and alpaca s les were similar (18.5 μm), the modified resistance to compression values were significantly higher for wool (with a peak value at 9.5 kPa compared to 2.1 kPa for alpaca). Cotton was different from wool and alpaca but showed a similar modified resistance to compression value (10.4 kPa) to wool. During cycles of compression, modified resistance to compression peak values decreased slightly and then tended to be constant. Even though the structures of wool, cotton and alpaca were quite different, there was no significant difference in the magnitude of decline in modified resistance to compression peak values. This means that the modified resistance to compression test is able to provide additional information on the resilience characteristics of different natural fibers, and can reveal the resistance behavior of fiber s les during cyclic compression.

Abstract: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been identified as a fundamental surface-sensitive technique that boosts Raman scattering by adsorbing target molecules on specific surfaces. The application of SERS highly relies on the development of smart SERS substrates, and thus the fabrication of SERS substrates has been constantly improved. Herein, we investigate the impacts of different substrates on SERS technology including plasmonic metal nanoparticles, semiconductors, and hybrid systems in quantitative food safety and quality analysis. We first discuss the fundamentals, substrate designs, and applications of SERS. We then provide a critical review of the recent progress of SERS in its usage for screening and detecting chemical and biological contaminants including fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, hazardous colorants, and biohazards in food s les to assess the analytical capabilities of this technology. Finally, we investigate the future trends and provide practical techniques that could be used to fulfill the requirements for rapid analysis of food at a low cost.

Modeling the temperatures of traveler and ring in ring spinning

Abstract: Ring spinning is the dominant system of manufacturing high-quality yarns in the textile industry. Spinning parameters affect the spinning tension distribution and consequently the temperatures of the ring/traveler system. Excessive traveler heat will limit the spindle speed and the efficiency of yarn production. This study modeled the effect of the traveler weight, yarn count, twist level and spindle speed on the temperatures of the traveler and ring during ring spinning. The finite element method was used to model the temperatures of the ring and the traveler for different spinning parameters. The experimental ring temperature and maximum traveler temperature from the validated model were recorded based on the experimental design. The results show that spindle speed, traveler weight and yarn count had a statistically significant effect on the temperatures of the traveler and the ring, with the spindle speed having the strongest effect. The twist level of yarn, within the range examined, had no statistically significant influence on the traveler and ring temperatures. For a given spindle speed, the traveler weight and yarn count have a significant effect on the maximum temperature of the traveler, and the temperature change is more pronounced at a higher spindle speed.

Abstract: The extracellular matrix (ECM) contains nanofibrous proteins and proteoglycans. Nanofabrication methods have received growing interest in recent years as a means of recapitulating these elements within the ECM. Near-field electrospinning (NFES) is a versatile fibre deposition method, capable of layer-by-layer nano-fabrication. The maximum layer height is generally limited in layer-by-layer NFES as a consequence of electrostatic effects of the polymer at the surface, due to residual charge and polymer dielectric properties. This restricts the total volume achievable by layer-by-layer techniques. Surpassing this restriction presents a complex challenge, leading to research innovations aimed at increasing patterning precision, and achieving a translation from 2D to 3D additive nanofabrication. Here we investigated a means of achieving this translation through the use of 3D electrode substrates. This was addressed by in-house developed technology in which selective laser melt manufactured standing pillar electrodes were combined with a direct suspension near-field electrospinning (SNFES) technique, which implements an automated platform to manoeuvre the pillar electrodes around the emitter in order to suspend fibres in the free space between the electrode support structures. In this study SNFES was used in multiple operation modes, investigating the effects of varying process parameters, as well as pattern variations on the suspended nanoarrays. Image analysis of the nanoarrays allowed for the assessment of fibre directionality, isotropy, and diameter identifying optimal settings to generate fibres for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract: Improving ring spinning efficiency and yarn quality is still challenging due to the sliding friction heat generated by the ring/traveler system, which limits the traveler speed and the yarn production rate. In this study, a finite element model based on the external heat source method was first used to explore the heat transfer process of the ring/traveler system. The reliability of the model was verified empirically. Subsequently, the validated model was used to analyze the effect of the model parameters on the temperature of the ring/traveler system. The results confirm that the high-temperature region of the ring and the traveler was concentrated on their contact area. More specifically the maximum temperature of the traveler was 159.2°C, which was almost three times the maximum temperature of the ring (62.6°C). In addition, smaller frictional coefficient and yarn tension, larger contact area and heat absorption rate, and better thermal conductivity can reduce the high local temperature of the ring/traveler system. Among them, yarn tension, friction coefficient, and heat absorption rate have a significant influence on the system temperature, especially for the small traveler. The developed model is also available for different fiber types and yarn counts which can be used for a comprehensive investigation of the heat transfer in ring spinning processes. The model and results of this study offer a theoretical basis for further optimizing the ring/traveler system and improving the productivity of ring spinning.

A direct 3D suspension near-field electrospinning technique for the fabrication of polymer nanoarrays

Abstract: Near-field electrospinning (NFES) is widely recognized as a versatile nanofabrication method, one suitable for applications in tissue engineering. Rapid developments in this field have given rise to layered nanofibrous scaffolds. However, this electrostatic fabrication process is limited by the electric field inhibitory effects of polymer deposition. This leads to a major challenge: how to surpass this limitation on planar/layered constructs. While the current focus in this area largely lies with the investigation of new materials, techniques and increasing precision of NFES systems and patterning, exploration of complex collector substrates is often restricted by (i) available technology and (ii) access to complex electrode manufacturing tools. To achieve nanofiber arrays suspended in free space, this paper documents both the development of an integrated NFES system and the potential of standing electrodes manufactured via selective laser melting. This system was first tested by 2D patterning on planar silicon, using polyethylene oxide polymer solution. To demonstrate suspension NFES, two patterns operating within and around the standing electrodes produced high volume suspended nanoarrays. Image analysis of the arrays allowed for the assessment of fiber directionality and isotropy. By scanning electron microscopy, it was found that a mean fiber diameter of 310 nm of the arrays was achieved. Effectively manoeuvring between the electrode pillars required a precision automated system (unavailable off-the-shelf), developed in-house. This technique can be applied to the fabrication of nanofiber structures of sufficient volume for tissue engineering.

Abstract: The micro-level structure of staple yarn and the fiber arrangement inside it has a decisive influence on its physical properties. This study aims to introduce a combined method based on micro computerized tomography (micro CT) and digital image processing techniques to probe the ring yarn structure in a non-invasive manner. Two micro CT systems at different CT settings were applied to achieve optimal quality CT images of cotton ring yarns. Three image processing algorithms were proposed to enhance and process the yarn CT images in order to extract yarn structural information. The proposed method was also applied on two yarn specimens, which varied significantly in terms of their tensile strength, to study differences in their underlying structures. The results showed that the longitudinal arrangement of fibers in terms of their migratory behavior had a decisive influence on the tensile properties of the yarn. The stronger yarn showed a higher value of the litude and intensity of fiber migration compared to the weaker yarn, suggesting that the protocol established in this study can effectively reveal fiber arrangements within a staple yarn structure in a non-invasive manner.

Abstract: Cool-touch polyester knitted fabrics with excellent thermal-wet and cooling comfort ability are desired for summer and sports clothing. Jade nanoparticle content and twist of filaments have significant effects on comfort-related properties. In this work, the effects of jade content and twist level of two types of cross-section polyester filament on fabric comfort-related properties were investigated in detail. Filaments were prepared and further knitted to fabric s les. The physical performance of polyester filaments, the thermal-wet transfer properties and dynamic cooling property of their fabrics were measured and analyzed. It was found that the jade nanoparticles mainly affected thermal transfer property of fabrics, and the best thermal transfer was exhibited by fabric with 7% cool-touch PET chip. With the increase of twist level, air permeability, water spreading and drying performance improved but thermal transfer ability decreased, and lower twist level of yarns was beneficial for achieving real moisture cooling properties. These results showed a major advance in developing thermal-wet comfort knitted fabrics using cool-touch filaments with appropriate twist level.

The mechanism of hairiness reduction in offset ring spinning with a diagonal yarn path

Abstract: Reducing yarn hairiness on a ring spinning machine generally involves an investment and ongoing process cost. Although conceptually successful, the cost factor associated with existing technologies has led to exploration for new ways of reducing hairiness. Offset spinning is an outcome of one such novel initiative in which the spinning triangle geometry is altered by diagonally offsetting the yarn path during spinning. This technique has been reported to reduce hairiness but a consensus on a specific direction of offset (left or right) remains pending as its underlying mechanism is still not completely understood. In this study, we developed an experimental setup to image a spinning triangle geometry in detail and observed the effect of offsetting its shape on fiber path. It was found that the direction of offset (left or right) in combination with a specific twist direction (S or Z) can result in a complete change of yarn twist configuration (Archimedean or Fermat's spiral), which ultimately controls hair generation tendency during spinning. On the basis of agreement between imaging observations and hairiness parameter results obtained from yarns spun with different offset conditions, a mechanism of hairiness reduction and preferred direction of offset is proposed.

Objective comparison of the softness of Australian Soft Rolling Skin wool and ordinary Merino wool

Abstract: Australian Merino wool is well-known in the wool market for its top quality, and the bulk of it is used in apparel where softness is a key factor for consumers. However, the ethical issue of mulesing is driving textile manufacturers and retailers to purchase non-mulesed wool from other sources instead of Australian mulesed wool. Australian Soft Rolling Skin (SRS) wool, grown on non-mulesed sheep, has been perceived to have a softer handle than ordinary Merino (OM) of the same diameter. In this research, three different methods were deployed to objectively compare the softness of SRS and OM wool. The force required to pull a bundle of clean wool through a series of parallel pins, that is, the pulling force, was used to evaluate the combined effect of fiber bending rigidity and surface friction. SRS wool resulted in lower pulling force than OM wool, with a difference of 15 cN/ktex (approximately 12.5%). According to the Resistance to Compression test results, SRS wool (4.5–5.7 kPa) was easier to compress than OM wool (5.4–6.5 kPa). The modified Resistance to Compression method showed different compression profiles for the two types of wool, and the slope of the decreasing curve (SDC) was used to study the softness property, with lower SDC values representing softer handle. These results confirm that over a fixed diameter range the SRS wool was more compressible and flexible, and this should result in a softer handle for clothing made from the fiber.

Abstract: Sustainability, being a recent buzzword, has been given an increasing emphasis in all industry fields, especially in the textile industry, since it is one of the main contributing sectors to resource consumption and thus environmental pollution. Among them, coloration of textiles should be paid special attention due to offering enormous savings in terms of sustainability. Within all fibres, cotton, being one of the cellulosic fibres, has been the most widely used material alone or together with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Therefore, we focus on the coloration of cellulose‐based fibres and its blends with PET in this review. There is only one single coloration technique at the intersection of sustainability and coloration, that is, sublimation or heat transfer printing, because it is the most eco‐friendly approach for the coloration of textiles. There are many studies on this issue, in which either cellulose, that is, cotton, or the transfer paper is modified/treated. In spite of many attempts for sublimation printability of cotton and its blends with PET, they still have problems in terms of sustainability that limits its applicability. In light of ever‐increasing sustainability issues such as Agenda 2030, new developments are yet to be expected for achieving sustainable coloration of cellulose‐based textiles and their blends. Therefore, it is high time to revisit the sublimation printability of cellulose‐based textiles, to mention the latest developments considering nanotechnological advancements, and to give a future perspective in this field.
