Abstract: We report on a tunable mid-infrared erbium fiber laser mode-locked via frequency shifted-feedback provided by an acousto-optic tunable filter. Q-switched pulses were produced when the driving frequency of the acousto-optic tunable filter was square-wave modulated.

Abstract: Erbium-doped ZBLAN (Er:ZBLAN) is a commonly used glass for mid-infrared fiber lasers. Quantifying the energy dynamics of the erbium ions is important for improving the performance of mid-infrared fiber lasers. Previous studies have found a discrepancy between the strength of inter-ion energy transfer measured in bulk Er:ZBLAN and the strength required to explain current fiber laser performance. We have measured the strength of the 4 I 13 / 2 + 4 I 13 / 2 → 4 I 15 / 2 + 4 I 9 / 2 energy transfer process directly in a range of fibers for the first time, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract: We report on a mid-infrared mode-locked fiber laser that uses an acousto-optic tunable filter to achieve frequency-shifted feedback pulse generation with frequency tuning over a 215 nm range. The laser operates on the 3.5 µm transition in erbium-doped zirconium fluoride-based fiber and utilizes the dual-wavelength pumping scheme. Stable, self-starting mode locking with a minimum pulse duration of 53 ps was measured using a two-photon absorption autocorrelator. The longest wavelength demonstrated was 3612 nm, and the maximum average powers achieved were 50 and 167 mW in fundamental and multi-pulse mode-locking regimes, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the longest wavelength rare-earth-doped mode-locked fiber laser demonstrated. The broad tunability promises potential uses for environmental sensing applications.

Two-photon absorption and saturable absorption of mid-IR in graphene

Abstract: We report on the response of graphene to high intensity mid-IR radiation and show that graphene exhibits saturable absorption and significant two-photon absorption in the spectral region of 1.55 μm to 3.50 μm (0.35 eV to 0.80 eV). We find that the effective modulation depth of multilayer graphene is limited by two-photon absorption, which will affect its performance as a laser mode-locking element. The measured saturation intensities of femtosecond pulses were found to depend on the third power of photon energy when we combined our results with others reported in the literature, while those of longer pulses were found to have a square root dependence.

Abstract: We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first mode-locked fiber laser to operate in the femtosecond regime well beyond 3 µm. The laser uses dual-wavelength pumping and nonlinear polarization rotation to produce 3.5 µm wavelength pulses with minimum duration of 580 fs at a repetition rate of 68 MHz. The pulse energy is 3.2 nJ, corresponding to a peak power of 5.5 kW.

Abstract: We report the first sub-picosecond pulses from a fiber laser with a directly generated emission beyond 3.0 µm. The 3.5 µm dual-wavelength pumped system is mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation, producing 1.3 nJ pulses lasting 830 fs.
