Abstract: Research has identified conceptual understanding as central to students’ mathematics comprehension. However, limited research is available to help teachers link mathematics concepts from junior to senior subjects during teaching and learning in Queensland. This mixed methods study is underpinned by constructivism. It explores teachers’ perceptions on how visual representations such as concept maps that link junior concepts (years 7 to 10) to senior concepts (year 11 and 12) can enhance the teaching and learning of conceptual knowledge at senior secondary mathematics. Surveys that include Likert scale items and open-ended questions were conducted with sixteen senior secondary mathematics teachers. To gain deeper understanding, eight semi-structured interviews were also conducted. Results show teachers hold the perception that when concept maps are used to link junior (years 7 to 10) to secondary concepts (year 11 and 12) they can be a resource that enhances conceptual knowledge, consolidation, and assessment of students’ mathematical knowledge. The role of visual representations in mathematics teaching and learning that is enhanced by concept maps is an area that needs more attention to help improve students’ participation and achievement.

Abstract: This paper reports on a participatory action research study that investigated the life circumstance associated with first-year education students who displayed limited participation with their study activities within a regional university. The life circumstance presented in this paper include first in family, age, socio-economic status, living away from home and work commitments. Research data include a business analytics program of the students’ records, research literature, and the experiences of the College Student Support Officer (CSSO). The four-phase analysis reflected on the prevalence of the life circumstances with the students who displayed limited participation and who received support from the CSSO. The paper discusses the support strategies employed by the CSSO and others support structures that may be required. The study concluded that the life circumstances associated with most first-year students who displayed limited participation can overlap and compound negatively to affect the students’ ability to complete their studies successfully.

Abstract: Planning is an instrument for effective teaching and learning of mathematics, which can address the dropping enrolments of year 12 students studying advanced mathematics. This study investigated teachers’ perceptions of how a planning framework on content sequencing from junior mathematical knowledge (years seven to 10) to senior mathematical knowledge (years 11 to 12) informs teaching and learning of mathematics in Queensland, Australia. This mixed methods study collected data through a survey and semi structured interviews with 16 high school mathematics teachers. The data reveals that the elements of the framework can enhance the process of content sequencing, promote an environment that enhances development of new knowledge from prior knowledge, and articulate the hierarchical nature of mathematics. The study found that the framework can enhance collaborative planning among teachers within and across year levels. The study argues that using the planning framework on content sequencing can be a significant tool that can play an important role in guiding teachers to plan and teach new mathematical knowledge building from prior mathematical knowledge.

Abstract: This article evaluates the pilot phase of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health Module. Although men experience higher levels of illness and die younger than women, educational programs to support health workers utilise a gender-based approach to increase participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males in health care are rare and lack appropriate content. Recognising this gap in service provision, and under the guidance of a Reference Group comprising community leaders in Aboriginal and Torres Strait male health, a comprehensive and culturally appropriate Male Health Module has been developed to enhance the capacity of health workers to improve access to services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males. Methods used were: in-depth interviews with Module developers, pilot workshops for trainers and health workers, questionnaires and focus group discussions with workshop participants, and participant observations. As well as enhancing capacity to facilitate access to health services for men, the Module was deemed relevant because of its potential to promote health worker empowerment and wellbeing. Findings revealed that improving access to services for men required male and female health workers working in partnership. Despite overall enthusiasm for the Module, the findings also revealed deep fear that it would end up ‘collecting dust on shelves’. Strategies to improve the Module quality and accessibility are highlighted.
