Abstract: We report observations of a sudden, explosive release of electrostatically charged 100 μm glass beads from a particle bed. These cross an air gap of several millimeters, are engulfed by an approaching pendant water drop, and form a metastable spherical agglomerate on the bed surface. The stability transition of the particle bed is explained by promotion of internal friction by in-plane electrostatic stresses. The novel agglomerates formed this way resemble the “liquid marbles” formed by coating a drop with hydrophobic particles. Complex multi-layered agglomerates may also be produced by this method, with potential industrial, pharmaceutical, environmental, and biological applications.

Abstract: S les of the feed, underflow and overflow from water-based separations conducted using a continuous REFLUXTM Classifier involving inclined channels with a 3 mm spacing have been fractionated. Another REFLUXTM Classifier operating in a semi-batch configuration using a dense fluidising medium of lithium heteropolytungstates (LST) was used to determine the density distributions of the three streams. The partition surface of the separator was quantified, and the technique was validated against sink/float data for a −300 + 38 µm chromite ore separation. It was found that the LST flow fractionation determined the D50 with remarkable accuracy across the entire size range, with the Ep values also very good above 75 µm. For water-based continuous separations involving a gold ore covering the size range −1.0 + 0.090 mm, the D50 varied with particle size to the power −0.22 and the Ep remained relatively constant at approximately 170 kg/m3 for each of the narrow particle size ranges. These results were consistent with the partition surface validated based on the much finer size range of the higher density chromite ore. The performance of the continuous system was then modelled, with the results shown to agree well with separations conducted on the feed. This approach has been developed as an alternative to using the sink/float test, thus offering a new option with both a lower cost and minimal health and environmental risk. The findings from this study can in turn be used to assess the amenability of a given ore to gravity pre-concentration.

Abstract: The selective agglomeration of a fine coal tailings stream using a high internal phase emulsion binder was investigated using a continuous steady-state plug flow through a high shear constriction. The emulsion binder effectively switches off the viscous resistance to particle–binder collision and adhesion, revealing the remarkable underlying speed of hydrophobic interactions. The emulsion binder is permeable, meaning the lubrication force between the particle and binder vanishes. The binder comprised a 95% aqueous solution dispersed within a 5% organic liquid (including the emulsifier). The agglomeration occurred within a high shear zone formed using a flow constriction within a 25 mm diameter pipe. The performance of the process was investigated at different flowrates in the range of 20–128 L/min, equating to extraordinarily high superficial flow velocities of up to 4.2 m/s and pressure drops in the range of 20–220 kPa. This rate greatly exceeds the nominal superficial feed velocity in flotation of order 0.01 m/s. Provided there was sufficient shear within the flow constriction, it was possible to process fine coal tailings with a feed ash of 50.1%, and generate a product ash of 8% at a combustible recovery of ~78%.

Abstract: Conventional ion flotation is hydrodynamically constrained by coupling of the gas flux and liquid flux that report to the concentrate. This constraint has greatly limited the industrial application of ion flotation, despite its remarkable effectiveness in extracting ionic species down to very low concentrations, of order 1 ppm. Previous work demonstrated that these hydrodynamic constraints could be significantly relaxed using the reflux flotation cell (RFC), a system incorporating parallel inclined channels to improve bubble-liquid segregation. However, it was found that bubble coalescence placed an additional limit on performance. In this study the impact of coalescence was minimized by reducing the volume reduction from 20 to 5, ensuring sufficient liquid reported to the concentrate with the bubbles. Under these conditions, an equivalent adsorptive recovery was achieved using the RFC at feed fluxes up to four times those in the conventional system. The maximum adsorptive extraction rate achieved with the RFC was three times that for the conventional system. A refined experimental methodology was used to quantify much more accurately the relative hydrodynamic limits of conventional and RFC operation. The previously neglected issue of split-zone segregation, resulting in smaller bubbles in the lower part of the cell, was also investigated.
