Abstract: As critical discussions on the internationalisation of social work continue, the importance of preparing social work students undertaking international study is increasingly recognised. This article describes the preparation process developed for a group of Australian students undertaking international study experiences in Asia. In particular, the content of an online ‘Intercultural Learning Module’ is discussed, highlighting a process that moves beyond notions of cultural competence towards a critical appreciation of cultural ersity, imperialism, racism and privilege. Critical reflection on self and culture to develop intercultural practice skills is discussed and student reflections on the value and impact of these materials presented.

Abstract: Journeys are funny things—they do not always take you were you were expecting them to, or even where you want to go. But if you are open to the experience, and committed to reflection, there are interesting lessons to be learned. What does it mean to shift from a practising professional (a lawyer–a social worker) to a discipline-based academic? Or to move beyond a narrow discipline to become a scholar of teaching and learning? What dangers lurk in the sw of managerialism? How can we escape from the towers of solitude and isolation that characterise debates around academic identity and become true barrier breakers and boundary blenders? The key, for these two travellers, lies in recognising the transformative potential of epistemological fusion.

Abstract: Transformative learning approaches have been applied in a erse range of educational settings, where they have been used to develop an understanding of learners' experiences and to guide teaching and learning practices in ways that promote in idual and social change. This article argues that despite clear congruence between many of the features of transformative learning theories and the nature and aims of social work education, this theoretical perspective has yet to be incorporated into thinking around critical approaches to the education of future social work practitioners. Drawing on literature that highlights the centrality of experience, critical reflection, and dialogue to the learning process, and that demonstrates a commitment in both social work and the broader field of transformative education to promoting in idual and social change, the benefits of using a transformative learning approach in social work education are discussed. These benefits may be of particular significance for social work educators seeking to promote emancipatory perspectives in their profession.
