Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the syntactic ability and the form of syntactic errors at the writing of deaf students at the senior high school level of Public Special School (SLBN) 1 Sumbawa. Participants in this study were five students consisting of 1 of the10th grade, 3 of the 11th students, and 1 of the 12th grade. The research was qualitative, while the data were collected using written tests. For the data analysis, the researchers used the theory of Chaer about syntactic functions and devices. The results of the study show that the forms of errors in the student's writing consist of errors on the use of subjects, predicates, objects, and adverbs. Other forms of errors lie in the order of words, word forms, and use of conjunction. Another finding is that some students were able to compile sentences based on S + Adv + P, while the other students were only able to compile sentences with the S + Adj pattern. Based on these findings, it is expected that parents or teachers play a role to teach children or students how to compose sentences with a simple pattern so that children who suffer from deafness are able to convey what they want to convey.

Abstract: Language is a tool or medium that humans use to communicate. The Sumbawa language has a figurative language that can be used for memories or can be used to express feelings to someone. It is called proverbs. Proverbs are groups of words or sentences that convey either about someone's condition, or about praise, satire, parables. This research is a classroom action research. In this study, the researchers used two techniques in data collection, namely documentation and observation. In analyzing the data, the researchers used three stages of data analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation and analysis, and drawing conclusions. Eleven Sumbawa language proverbs were selected as they contain the meanings of social phenomena. There were five participants in this study. From these five participants, this research can be said to be successful. Students succeeded in explaining social phenomena in English by using pictures as the media.

Abstract: As future researchers, can students and practitioners in language education just enter an actual research project without adequate theoretical understanding of it. Can they expect that they would understand it while doing the research. If not, what sorts of understanding should they possess. In other words, are there several issues which should be addressed in order that they are well informed about how and what to carry out research satisfactorily. The answer to this last question is „yes‟, even not only addressed to students, but also to school teachers and lecturers or the academic community at large. This is because theoretical understanding should continue to be developed berita terkini update and refreshed. Consequently, before embarking on a research project, one should understand some key updated issues which develop around her/his field of specialization, both global and local issues. Global issues involve the development of new or popular trends in social sciences and particularly in language educational research. In addition the intertextual relations of research in the field and other related fields, the interconnection between and among researchers and other stakeholders should be taken into consideration. The local issues include the possibilities of carrying out research in a certain context which may differ depending on the contexts, the means available as well as the constraints which influence the research implementation. All these informing issues are of high contribution for making decisions about doing research. The discussion is compelling because, as a matter of fact, literature in English language teaching (e.g., articles in TEFLIN Journal, „Indonesian Linguistic Journal‟, and many open access national and international journals) has not given a comprehensive attention on how stakeholders in research should manage each of their power, how ethical issues should be dealt with properly, and how trustworthiness is particularly addressed. Generally informed by social sciences research literature and relevant ELT references, the author highlights the major decisions which researchers are faced with, in relation to power, ethics, truth claims and methodological considerations in research. Based on the highlights, the author then reflects on the issues for carrying out research in Indonesian English language teaching contexts as informed by his professional experience and observation

Abstract: This paper argues that to have a successful learning of English in Indonesian schools, the consideration of culture should be at the forefront. That is, it is acknowledged that to learn English as a second or foreign language cannot be separated from the target language culture or the western culture. On the other hand, the perspective of English as global or international language allows the integration or use of students’ local cultural background into the teaching materials. To shed light on this critical issue, this study seeks to describe Indonesian learners’ characteristic cultural backgrounds and their perception toward western culture. Relying on a literature study and the first author’s experience and observation, the findings show that Indonesian learners share the culturally embedded characteristics of passivity, shyness, and lack of critical thinking, while perceiving western culture as negative, colonizing, dominating, and threatening. Therefore, it is concluded that English language teaching in Indonesia should integrate students’ local cultures and be prepared and implemented by highly skilled Indonesian teachers and practitioners who are abreast with ELT theories and development at the world level including those from the western world.

Abstract: This study examines the content of constructivist learning paradigms in the textbook and students' understanding of the Introduction to Education course. Data collection methods are the textbook, student answer documentation, focused review session and assignment of student resume. The textbook analysis found five substances of constructivist learning paradigm, namely the nature of human, lifelong education, learning independence, the role of information technology, and the integration of educational benchmarks, which are parts of the textbook chapters. Analysis of the answers to the tasks, quizzes and student exams indicates that the students' understanding of the substance of this material is still medium or partial but has increased significantly after a focused review session was held, i.e. 75% or more students have a good and complete understanding. From the results of this study, it is suggested that (1) the textbook of Introduction to Education is rewritten, to put the five substances of constructivist learning paradigm as separate chapters so as to obtain their broader and deeper study portion and (2) the materials not yet understood well by the students should be reviewed through a focused review session.

Abstract: Penguasaan bahasa Arab sangat penting untuk memahami ajaran Islam.

Abstract: Teaching and learning to speak English using oral language data drawn from real life communication can be unique experiences for English teachers and students who usually rely on unauthentic written texts of a textbook. This small study focuses on a conversation involving the author and his native speaker counterpart. Entities of the conversation put under analysis and discussion include its register and generic structure, exchanges, prosodic features and communication strategies. The dialogic features of the text are presented in the data collection procedure and description section. The article is expected to provide a perspective for doing similar analysis with other oral data by teachers and advanced learners of English as a second or foreign language. Abstract: This article reports on teacher trainees’ ability in doing a critical analysis of an extract of English teaching materials from a gender perspective. The critical ability was prompted using a textbook extract that generated two gender issues, namely woman-man relationship and the position of women in occupational discourse. The participants were 38 trainees enrolled in textbook analysis subject in the English Department of a college in regional Indonesia. The research data were the trainees’ results of the mid-term test, designed with explicit instruction to ascertain the afore-mentioned critical elements, and their results of the final exam with implied instruction to discern the same critical elements. The data were analysed qualitatively by interpreting the participants’ responses based on their degree of criticality. The mid-term test results show that more than half of them were critical about woman-man relationship, while only 18% were critical about women position at work. The trainees’ results in the final test demonstrate a significant downturn of their critical thinking performances. Only 15% criticized woman-man relationship and 13% problematized women position at work. These findings raise concerns about the trainees’ level of criticality and so systematic efforts to sharpen trainees’ critical analytical ability should be further attempted.

Abstract: span lang="EN-US" The research reported on a literacy intervention program for 150 early grade learners from low socio-economic background by involving 50 volunteers in 50 different village spots in Sumbawa Regency of Indonesia. The research was emancipatory because it seeks to empower the community to address the local problems of literacy learning loss experienced by the needy early graders. The data were collected through literacy assessment, observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings showed that 90% of the early graders improved their literacy mostly with two and one level progress. Factors contributing to the success were good preparation of volunteers, engaging teaching approaches, relevant materials that suited student levels, and continuous assessment. The last key finding was that the volunteers strongly embodied teaching voluntarism as a soul with six features (affection towards others, action of giving, availability, positive inner feelings, heroism, and inity). The recommendation from these findings is that multi-stakeholders, including the government, provide support to enhance the program sustainability. This research contributes a model of voluntary teaching for low socio-economic early graders that can be adapted in other locations in Indonesia and overseas. /span
