Abstract: The analysis of the cell concentration, volume concentration, and colony size of Microcystis is widely used to provide early warnings of the occurrence of blooms and to facilitate the development of predictive tools to mitigate their impact. This study developed a new approach for the analysis of the cell concentration, volume concentration, and colony size of Microcystis by applying a laser particle analyzer. Four types of Microcystis s les (55 s les in total) were analyzed by a laser particle analyzer and a microscope. By the application of the laser particle analyzer (1) when n = 1.40 and k = 0.1 (n is the intrinsic refractive index, whereas k is absorption of light by the particle), the results of the laser particle analyzer showed good agreement with the microscopic results for the obscuration indicator, volume concentration, and size distribution of Microcystis (2) the Microcystis cell concentration can be calculated based on its linear relationship with obscuration and (3) the volume concentration and size distribution of Microcystis particles (including single cells and colonies) can be obtained. The analytical processes involved in this new approach are simpler and faster compared to that by microscopic counting method. From the results, it was identified that the relationship between cell concentration and volume concentration depended on the colony size of Microcystis because the intercellular space was high when the colony size was high. Calculation of cell concentration and volume concentration may occur when the colony size information is sufficient.
Characterization of phytoplankton community in a river ecosystem using pigment composition: a feasibility study

Abstract: CHEMTAX is a mathematical software for phytoplankton composition evaluation using pigment composition. Although this method has been previously applied in the ocean environment, we firstly utilized the combination of matrix factorization program CHEMTAX and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to characterize the phytoplankton community from a river system (western part of Weihe River Basin). The obtained results were compared with those from microscopic examination. Based on the comparison, it is suggested that after increasing the ratio of characteristic pigment to chlorophyll a of diatoms and euglena, the diatoms calculated by the CHEMTAX method accounted for 80% of the total biomass, and the results were consistent with microscopic examination, but diatoms obtained from F2, C1 and W5 s le sites were significantly overestimated 33%~60%. The comparison also showed that the model always underestimated cyanobacteria (s le sites F2, C1 were underestimated 25%) and euglena were overestimated (s le sites W3, Q1 were respectively overestimated 33%, 23%), but for chlorophytes, both overestimation and underestimation could occur. When the relevant results from previous applications in the ocean phytoplankton community evaluation were taken into consideration, it can be concluded that CHEMTAX-HPLC method was not accurate enough to characterize the phytoplankton communities in the freshwater (river/lake) ecosystem.

Disentangling the drivers of phytoplankton community composition in a heavily sediment-laden transcontinental river

Abstract: Phytoplankton play a crucial role in energy flow and carbon cycling in aquatic ecosystems however, exploring the driving factors influencing phytoplankton, especially in heavily sediment-laden rivers, is challenging. We analyzed 704 s les from 44 s ling sites along the Yellow River to investigate the biogeographic, environmental, and anthropogenic impacts on the phytoplankton community composition. Using cluster analysis, we identified three different phytoplankton community compositions in Regions Ⅰ, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ, which were consistent with the three primary changes in the water-surface slope across the three regions. The s ling results showed that the Bacillariophyta primarily consisted of Navicula, Cyclotella, Synedra, Fragilaria, Gyrosigma, Diatoma, and Asterionella. In addition, representation by Chlorophyta was dominated by Chlamydomonas, Pandorina, Closteriopsis, and Closterium, while Phormidium was the dominant Cyanophyta genus. The variation partitioning results indicated that spatial factors (geographic distance) were the most important determinants of phytoplankton community succession. Additionally, our results highlighted that the influence of spatial and climatic factors on the succession of the phytoplankton community structure was much greater than that of the water quality. Compared to that in the free-flowing river, the phytoplankton biomass in the impoundment was much higher, and the phytoplankton community was dominated by Dinophyta, Chlorophyta, and Cyanophyta, primarily because of anthropogenic impacts. Based on the composition and biomass of phytoplankton communities in different regions, the phytoplankton community composition in the Yellow River was found to be primarily influenced by the erosion of the watershed and the inflow of tributaries rather than by limited in situ algae growth.

High nutrient concentration and temperature alleviated formation of large colonies of Microcystis: Evidence from field investigations and laboratory experiments

Abstract: Correlations between Microcystis colony size and environmental factors were investigated in Meiliang Bay and Gonghu Bay of Lake Taihu (China) from 2011 to 2013. Compared with Gonghu Bay, both nutrient concentrations and Microcystis colony sizes were greater in Meiliang Bay. The median colony size (D50: 50% of the total mass of particles smaller than this size) increased from April to August and then decreased until November. In both bays, the average D50 of Microcystis colonies were <100 μm in spring, but colonies within moderate-size (100-500 μm) dominated in summer. The differences in colony size in Meiliang Bay and Gonghu Bay were probably due to horizontal drift driven by the prevailing south wind in summer. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of field data indicated that colony size was negatively related to nutrient concentrations but positively related to air temperature, suggesting that low nutrient concentrations and high air temperature promoted formation of large colonies. To validate the field survey, Microcystis colonies collected from Lake Taihu were cultured at different temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30 °C) under high and low nutrient concentrations for 9 days. The size of Microcystis colonies significantly decreased when temperature was above 20 °C but had no significant change at 15 °C. The differences in temperature effects on colony formation shown from field and laboratory suggested that the larger colonies in summer were probably due to the longer growth period rather than the higher air temperature and light intensity. In addition, colony size decreased more significantly at high nutrient levels. Therefore, it could be concluded that high nutrient concentration and temperature may alleviate formation of large colonies of Microcystis.

Abstract: A novel thin-film nanocomposite forward-osmosis (FO) membrane was fabricated on hydrophilic nylon microfiltration (MF) support by interfacial polymerization with the assistance of an intermediate layer of graphene oxide and multiwall carbon nanotube (GO/MWCNT). The chemical composition, structure, and surface properties of the synthesized FO membranes were studied using various characterization methods. It was found that the GO/MWCNT composite layer not only provided ultrafast nanochannels for water transport but also reduced the thickness of the polyamide layer by up to 60%. As a result, the novel FO membrane exhibited a higher water flux and lower reverse salt flux compared with the membrane synthesized without the GO/MWCNT intermediate layer. This method offers promising opportunities to fabricate thin-film composite membranes on microfiltration substrates for FO application with inhibited concentration polarization phenomenon and expected separation performance.
SARS‐CoV ‐2 transmission risk to healthcare workers performing tracheostomies: a systematic review

Abstract: Tracheostomy is a commonly performed procedure in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) receiving mechanical ventilation (MV). This review aims to investigate the occurrence of SARS‐CoV‐2 transmission from patients to healthcare workers (HCWs) when tracheostomies are performed. This systematic review used the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta‐analysis framework. Studies reporting SARS‐CoV‐2 infection in HCWs involved in tracheostomy procedures were included. Sixty‐nine studies (between 01/11/2019 and 16/01/2022) reporting 3117 tracheostomy events were included, 45.9% (1430/3117) were performed surgically. The mean time from MV initiation to tracheostomy was 16.7 ± 7.9 days. Location of tracheostomy, personal protective equipment used, and anaesthesia technique varied between studies. The mean procedure duration was 14.1 ± 7.5 minutes was statistically longer for percutaneous tracheostomies compared with surgical tracheostomies (mean duration 17.5 ± 7.0 versus 15.5 ± 5.6 minutes, p = 0.02). Across 5 out of 69 studies that reported 311 tracheostomies, 34 HCWs tested positive for SARS‐CoV‐2 and 23/34 (67.6%) were associated with percutaneous tracheostomies. In this systematic review we found that SARS‐CoV‐2 transmission to HCWs performing or assisting with a tracheostomy procedure appeared to be low, with all reported transmissions occurring in 2020, prior to vaccinations and more recent strains of SARS‐CoV‐2. Transmissions may be higher with percutaneous tracheostomies. However, an accurate estimation of infection risk was not possible in the absence of the actual number of HCWs exposed to the risk during the procedure and the inability to control for multiple confounders related to variable timing, technique, and infection control practices.

Abstract: Optimization of the microalgae culture conditions could significantly reduce the production costs of microalgae-derived biodiesel. In the current study, a new process of adding different forms using the multiple small-dose method was employed. The effects of different forms of nitrogen (NaNO3, NH4Cl, and CH4N2O) and their concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg L−1) on the growth and lipid production of Scenedesmus obliquus were studied. Algae density and lipid production increased with increasing nitrogen concentration for all different forms of nitrogen except NH4Cl. The Scenedesmus obliquus growth was promoted by adding NaNO3 and CH4N2O, but was inhibited by adding NH4Cl. Adding 2 mg N L−1 of CH4N2O daily yielded the highest cell density (1.7 × 107 cells mL−1) and lipid production (242.4 mg L−1). These conditions can thus maintain the biomass of Scenedesmus obliquus, increase its lipid accumulation, and decrease the costs of biodiesel production.
