Abstract: The merger in 2009 between China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines came at a time when both airlines were suffering heavy losses and were struggling for survival during the global financial crisis. An examination of the prices on China Eastern's seven domestic Shanghai-based routes suggests that on average fares on departure days increased by 22% post-merger. It appears that the merger conferred China Eastern with significant market power owing to the parallel nature of this acquisition, thereby resulting in the record profit reported in 2010. This reminds regulatory authorities to remain vigilant in handling airline mergers when numerous parallel routes are involved.

Abstract: This paper investigates the location strategies of Chinese energy firms over the period 2003–2013. The results confirm that market-seeking and resource-seeking are two significant motivations behind Chinese energy firms’ outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). As expected, a higher level of the host country’s energy resource reserves attracts more energy resource related projects and the host country’s renewable energy output influences Chinese firms’ renewable energy investment. However, for OFDI in energy resources, the political stability of the host country is not a significant factor while when investing in renewable energy, it is a significant consideration. Interestingly, for OFDI in energy resources, trade integration measured by the share of exports sold in the host country in China’s total exports, is not statistically significant while for OFDI in renewable energy, trade integration affects the investment decision.

Abstract: This study explores the spatial distribution characteristics of travel activities and their relationship with land use, using data from the resident travel survey in 2015 of Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou City, China. A new classification method is proposed to classify the travel activity patterns into three groups: single-activity travel, multi-activity intermittent travel, and multi-activity continuous travel. The main findings are: (a) the length of activity chain and the proportion of multi-activity travels increase with the distance between residence and activity centre (b) the non-home destinations of single-activity travel, multi-activity intermittent travel and multi-activity continuous travel agglomerate towards the activity centre, and the degree of agglomeration increases in this order (c) the distribution density of Point Of Interest (POI) and activity destinations have strong positive correlations in space (d) some attributes of POIs and demographics have significant influence on multi-activity continuous travels. These findings are useful in inducing the activities through reasonable combinations and spatial interconnections of POIs in urban planning.

Abstract: The relationship between container location dispersion for a single loading and the efficiency of quay cranes (QCs) was investigated. For this purpose, a discrete-event-based simulation model was developed to capture the container-handling process at a transshipment container terminal. A series of experiments were conducted to illustrate the effects of container location dispersion on the long-term performance of QCs and container allocation. These experiments showed that the container location dispersion has a significant effect on the distribution of loading containers. An optimal choice of container location dispersions can improve the efficiency of the QC and help to manage uncertainty at a lower cost. It is suggested that yard managers consider the workload of each berth when deciding on the location dispersion for a loading service. In addition, it was found that optimal container allocation dispersion reduces the congestion caused by time window conflicts and insufficient available equipment.
