Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate that paired photons generated in different sections of a down-conversion cone, when some of the interacting waves show Poynting vector walk-off, carry different spatial correlations, and therefore a different degree of spatial entanglement. This is shown to be in agreement with theoretical results. We also discuss how this azimuthal distinguishing information of the down-conversion cone is relevant for the implementation of quantum sources aimed at the generation of entanglement in other degrees of freedom, such as polarization.

Abstract: In this manuscript we analyze the emergence of protected multiphoton states in scattering problems with cylindrical symmetry. In order to do that, we first provide a formal definition of the concept of postselected symmetry-protection. We show that the notion of symmetry-protection is not limited to one- or two-photon states, on the contrary, it can be formally extended to the multiphoton case. In addition, we prove for the case of cylindrical symmetry that all possible multiphoton protected states are constructed from a small set of one- and two-photon states. Finally, we point out possible applications that symmetry-protected states may have in quantum communications, concretely, in the construction of decoherence-free subspaces.

Abstract: Two conditions on symmetries are identified as necessary for a linear scattering system to be able to rotate the linear polarization of light: Lack of at least one mirror plane of symmetry and electromagnetic duality symmetry. Duality symmetry is equivalent to the conservation of the helicity of light in the same way that rotational symmetry is equivalent to the conservation of angular momentum. When the system is a solution of a single species of particles, the lack of at least one mirror plane of symmetry leads to the familiar requirement of chirality of the in idual particle. With respect to helicity preservation, according to the analytical and numerical evidence presented in this paper, the solution preserves helicity if and only if the in idual particle itself preserves helicity. However, only in the particular case of forward scattering the helicity preservation condition on the particle is relaxed: We show that the random orientation of the molecules endows the solution with an effective rotational symmetry at its turn, this leads to helicity preservation in the forward scattering direction independently of any property of the particle. This is not the case for a general scattering direction. These results advance the current understanding of the phenomena of molecular optical activity and provide insight for the design of polarization control devices at the nanoscale.

Abstract: In this paper we study both theoretically and experimentally a method to characterize the litude and phase of a paraxial optical beam. The method is based on the spiral phase interferometry technique, recently proposed. We theoretically analyze how to adapt the original proposal to deal with the special characteristics of finite optical beams. Finally, we compare a series of numerical and experimental results to show the advantages and limitations of our proposal.

Abstract: Numerous variants of verbal fluency tasks exist within clinical and research domains that purport to measure "executive function." However, to date, there has been a paucity of research examining what specific abilities are measured by these tasks. In this study, the relationships between a select group of cognitive constructs and phonemic, semantic, alternating, and excluded-letter verbal fluency tests were examined in 93 young healthy in iduals (aged 18 to 35 years old). Forward-selection multiple regression analyses were performed for each fluency task. Phonemic fluency was associated with verbal intellectual function and processing speed semantic fluency was associated with working memory and semantic word retrieval excluded-letter fluency was associated with processing speed and alternating fluency was associated with semantic word retrieval. These results highlight verbal intellectual function, processing speed, and semantic word-retrieval contributions to verbal fluency performances. The main conclusion from this study is that the abilities associated with verbal fluency performance in a young healthy population are multifactorial and differ across fluency variants. These findings progress our theoretical understanding of what is measured by different verbal fluency tasks and will assist interpretation of performance.

Abstract: We report on a novel approach, based on sub-wavelength spatial phase variations at the focus of high-order beams, to reconfigure the optical near field distribution near plasmonic nanostructures. We first show how the introduction of phase jumps in the incident field driving a gap nanoantenna strongly affects its near field response. Beyond, we demonstrate the feasibility of exploiting this approach to selectively switch on and off hot-spots sites within a complex antenna architecture.

Abstract: It is generally assumed that a light beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM) per photon of lh, is transformed, when traversing a Dove prism, into a light beam with OAM per photon of -lh. In this paper, we show theoretically and experimentally that this OAM transformation rule does not apply for highly focused light beams. This result should be taken into account when designing classical and quantum algorithms that make use of Dove prims to manipulate the OAM of light.

Abstract: We demonstrate the distribution of quantum entanglement via optical free-space links to independent receivers separated by 600 m, with no line of sight between each other. A Bell inequality between those receivers is violated by more than four standard deviations, confirming the quality of the entanglement. This outdoor experiment represents a step toward satellite-based distributed quantum entanglement.
