How Can Autonomous Vehicles Convey Emotions to Pedestrians? A Review of Emotionally Expressive Non-Humanoid Robots

Abstract: In recent years, researchers and manufacturers have started to investigate ways to enable autonomous vehicles (AVs) to interact with nearby pedestrians in compensation for the absence of human drivers. The majority of these efforts focuses on external human–machine interfaces (eHMIs), using different modalities, such as light patterns or on-road projections, to communicate the AV’s intent and awareness. In this paper, we investigate the potential role of affective interfaces to convey emotions via eHMIs. To date, little is known about the role that affective interfaces can play in supporting AV–pedestrian interaction. However, emotions have been employed in many smaller social robots, from domestic companions to outdoor aerial robots in the form of drones. To develop a foundation for affective AV–pedestrian interfaces, we reviewed the emotional expressions of non-humanoid robots in 25 articles published between 2011 and 2021. Based on findings from the review, we present a set of considerations for designing affective AV–pedestrian interfaces and highlight avenues for investigating these opportunities in future studies.

Virtual Urban Field Studies: Evaluating Urban Interaction Design Using Context-Based Interface Prototypes

Abstract: In this study, we propose the use of virtual urban field studies (VUFS) through context-based interface prototypes for evaluating the interaction design of auditory interfaces. Virtual field tests use mixed-reality technologies to combine the fidelity of real-world testing with the affordability and speed of testing in the lab. In this paper, we apply this concept to rapidly test sound designs for autonomous vehicle (AV)–pedestrian interaction with a high degree of realism and fidelity. We also propose the use of psychometrically validated measures of presence in validating the verisimilitude of VUFS. Using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, we analysed users’ perceptions of presence in our VUFS prototype and the relationship to our prototype’s effectiveness. We also examined the use of higher-order ambisonic spatialised audio and its impact on presence. Our results provide insights into how VUFS can be designed to facilitate presence as well as design guidelines for how this can be leveraged.

Sensitivity Analysis of the Noah‐MP Land Surface Model for Soil Hydrothermal Simulations Over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: The Tibetan Plateau (TP) features unique and highly heterogeneous soils, terrains, vegetation, and climate. Accurately modeling complex freeze‐thaw processes and their hydrothermal impacts remains a great challenge. This study focused on deciphering the spatiotemporal variability of erse parameterization schemes in the soil hydrothermal simulations using the Noah‐MP land surface model. We first discussed the spin‐up time required by the model to reach the equilibrium state, and then performed a sensitivity analysis of these schemes. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer land surface temperature and Soil Moisture Active Passive remote sensing products were used as benchmarks to evaluate the schemes' performance. Results show that longer spin‐up times are required in permafrost regions owing to water phase changes. Ground temperature and soil temperature are mainly sensitive to energy‐related schemes. Vegetation‐related schemes play an important role after the growing season begins on the southeastern TP. Soil water content shows strong sensitivity to schemes related to both water and energy transport. However, the sensitivity of these energy‐related schemes is weakened when simulating total soil moisture, including the total amount of water and ice, indicating that these schemes have marked impacts on soil freeze‐thaw processes. These results reveal the different spatial (both regional and depth‐related) and temporal effects of parameterization schemes we also provided a preliminary selection of these schemes at a regional scale that could facilitate the further improvement of the soil hydrothermal simulations on the TP.

Simulating Wearable Urban Augmented Reality Experiences in VR: Lessons Learnt from Designing Two Future Urban Interfaces

Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) has the potential to fundamentally change how people engage with increasingly interactive urban environments. However, many challenges exist in designing and evaluating these new urban AR experiences, such as technical constraints and safety concerns associated with outdoor AR. We contribute to this domain by assessing the use of virtual reality (VR) for simulating wearable urban AR experiences, allowing participants to interact with future AR interfaces in a realistic, safe and controlled setting. This paper describes two wearable urban AR applications (pedestrian navigation and autonomous mobility) simulated in VR. Based on a thematic analysis of interview data collected across the two studies, we find that the VR simulation successfully elicited feedback on the functional benefits of AR concepts and the potential impact of urban contextual factors, such as safety concerns, attentional capacity, and social considerations. At the same time, we highlight the limitations of this approach in terms of assessing the AR interface’s visual quality and providing exhaustive contextual information. The paper concludes with recommendations for simulating wearable urban AR experiences in VR.
