Abstract: This paper presents dynamic modeling of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMC) using passive electric network components. The dynamic model using standard electric network components is a novel approach to model the transient and steady state voltage and current characteristics of IPMCs. This leads to a global model for IPMCs with fine tunable parameters, which depend on the material properties, the manufacturing process and the physical dimensions of the actuator. The dynamic model has been verified by simulation, system identification and experimental studies.

Abstract: The nature of charge injection has been investigated across the Au-poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) interface of two kinds: P3HT on Au (bottom contact) and Au on P3HT (top contact). The J-V characteristics of a Au(bottom)/P3HT/Au(top) sandwich cell are analyzed by using the Fowler–Nordheim model and the hole barrier height at the top and bottom contacts has been estimated. The top contact showed a higher barrier height in comparison to the bottom contact. The quenching of photoluminescence spectra and the disappearance of characteristic P3HT peaks from the absorption spectra for the top contact supports that the ionically sputtered gold atoms on the polymer give rise to greater density of interfacial trap sites than those at bottom interface.

Abstract: A novel erometric biosensor based on polypyrrole (PPy) nanotube array deposited on a Pt plated nano-porous alumina substrate and its performances are described. Glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme was selected as the model enzyme in this study. Commercially available nano-porous alumina discs were used to fabricate electrodes in order to study the feasibility of enzyme entrapment by physical adsorption. A PPy/PF6- film comprising of nanotube array was synthesized using a solution containing 0.05 M Pyrrole and 0.1 M NaPF6 at a current density of 0.3 mA/cm2 for 90 s. The immobilization was done by physical adsorption of 5 microL of GOx (from a stock solution of 2 mg/mL of 210 U/mg) on each electrode. A sensitivity of 7.4 mA cm(-2) M(-1) was observed with PPy nanotube array where the maximum tube diameter was 100 nm. A linear range of 500 microM-13 mM and a response time of about 3 s were observed with a nanotube array where the maximum tube diameter was 200 nm. The synthesized nanotube arrays were characterized by galvanostatic electrochemical technique. Calculated value of apparent Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) was 7.01 mM. The use of nano-porous template electrodes leads to an efficient enzyme loading and provides an increased surface area for sensing the reaction. These factors contribute to increase the characteristic performances of the novel biosensor.

Abstract: Liquid identification according to their physical properties is a well known technique and different types of stand alone sensors are used to measure each of these parameters. However, in this paper we propose a single multi-functional sensor for the measurement of four parameters namely, temperature, viscosity, clarity and permittivity of a liquid. The operation of the proposed sensor is theoretically described and its performances are experimentally tested. This multi-functional sensor can be used to identify an unknown liquid for its maximum likelihood into a characterized zone of liquids maintained in a previously built database.

Abstract: Food security is critical for the sustainability of society. The spoilage of stocked food is an ongoing problem that causes significant losses to the global economy. Novel portable analytical platforms that provide timely information on the condition of food stock can support informed decision‐making on the safety of food consumption as well as on maximization of food storage lifetime. Ammonia (NH 3 ) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) are two of the major harmful gases that are produced due to bacteria activity during the food spoilage process. The timely detection of these gases in food stocks has vital importance to human health. In this review article, the recent progress of conducting polymer based NH 3 and H 2 S gas sensors including sensor device prototypes, their sensing mechanisms, materials and methodologies for sensor fabrication, and their suitability for the development of consumer electronic devices for food spoilage detection are highlighted.

Abstract: Polypyrrole films were electrodeposited under different high transverse electric fields, and their film morphologies and functionalities were investigated. The surface morphology at the initial polymerization stage was investigated under AFM and the cross sectional morphologies of fully grown films were investigated by SEM. Both these microscopic investigations revealed the film morphology has been influenced by the applied transverse field. The cyclic voltammetry tests illustrate a reduction in the anodic peak voltage with the increase of transverse field. All these results suggest that the polymer electro-polymerized under a transverse high transverse electric field has some degree of pre-orientation compared to the films synthesized without a transverse electric field.
