Abstract: We present results from a qualitative study of smokers of home-grown tobacco (chop-chop). In particular, we focused on participants' perceptions of the health effects of smoking chop-chop relative to legal tobacco. Consistent with previous work, we found that smokers of chop-chop believe that relatively less chemical treatment of chop-chop tobacco meant lower health risks than with legal products, although many believed the ultimate difference in effect on health was negligible.

Caring for baby: what sources of information do mothers use and trust?

Abstract: A broad array of information channels exists for service customers. The purpose of this study is to better understand the relationship between the use of, and trust in, information channels, so that there is scope to increase the effectiveness of reliable information provision and, hence, to change behaviour. This study empirically explored whether customers use channels they trust, and trust what they use, and examined the association between in idual (demographic) factors and that trust. A total of 472 mothers completed an online survey. The current study empirically explored channel trust and in idual factors, finding that in idual factors (such as education level) and trust warrant inclusion in traditional communication models such as Communication–Human Information Processing. The findings revealed that the more highly educated a customer is, the more likely it will be that a health professional is their most trusted channel, but the less likely it will be that they consider family the most trusted channel. Magazines are the least trusted information channel. Further, while informants’ most trusted information channel was healthcare professionals, this was not the most common information channel used. This study was limited to a female consumer s le focused upon one service (maternity and child health) and five key information channels, which limits the generalizability. Further, the data were collected via an internet survey, which have biased may the results on use and trust of the internet. The findings showcase the importance of demographic factors and the relationship between trust in information sources and use. The insights developed provide a useful research agenda for the future. This study was limited to a female consumer s le focused upon one service (maternity and child health) and five key information channels, which limits the generalizability of the findings. The data were collected via an internet survey, which may bias the results on use and trust of the internet. Additionally, the data were collected over five years ago, which may have some impact on factors such as the role and importance of internet usage. However, these limitations do not detract from the primary focus of this study and the main findings remain new and relevant. This study undertook an empirical exploration to examine information channel trust and in idual factors, thereby extending the research focus beyond current traditional communication model approaches. Models such as Communication–Human Information Processing focus on in idual cognitions and assume a staged sequence of decision-making following traditional decision-making models and ignoring channel attributes such as channel trust, thereby limiting understanding. The current study indicates that communication models will benefit from the addition of channel trust and additional in idual factors (such as demographics) to extend understanding beyond in idual cognitions.

Consumer resource integration in the subsistence marketplace: A comparative study of urban and rural consumers

Abstract: Ongoing research on resource integration highlights the central role of resources and describes all social and economic actors, including consumers, as resource integrators who actively engaged in experiences. How consumers integrate their resources is particularly important in the subsistence marketplace, which operates in a limited resource setting. The objective of this study is to examine how subsistence consumers integrate resources in achieving their life satisfaction goals. Data was collected using a semi‐structured questionnaire from a s le of 244 urban and rural consumers in Sri Lanka. The results demonstrate that resource integration significantly influences the life satisfaction of subsistence marketplace consumers, although its influence is not uniform across the urban and rural sectors. While “operand” resources are found to have most influence, the low usage of “operant” resources suggests that there is underutilisation of skills, competencies and intangible resources involved in creating value in the subsistence marketplace. The study found substantial differences in the way urban and rural consumers integrate their resources. Contrary to previous research, consumer aspirations had minimal effect on life satisfaction goals of consumers. The study provides implications for marketers to identify the types of consumer resources owned by subsistence marketplace consumers and their usage in different sectors.

Asymmetry and time variation in exchange rate exposure

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide some insights into the exchange rate exposure of Australian stock returns. Using a dynamic econometric approach that allows for both asymmetry and time‐varying risk exposures in both the exchange rate variable and the market variable, a large s le of Australian firms were tested over the period of January 2001 and December 2005. The data were analysed using three different classification methods, forming portfolios according to industry sector, size deciles, and censoring deciles. Although the evidence of exchange rate exposure is limited across the s le of industries, the following were found: a time‐varying asymmetric effect primarily in the utilities sector, time‐varying exposure in the materials and energy sectors, and an asymmetric effect in the technology sector. Further, some time‐varying asymmetric exchange rate exposure was found across most size and censoring deciles and also substantial evidence of a positive asymmetric effect in the market beta across all three classification methods. This approach varies from previous studies in this area that only allow for asymmetry and time variation in exchange rate exposures. The paper also examines the Australian stock market, a market which has not been extensively tested in this area of empirical research.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to ascertain whether the health of past and current smokers of illicit tobacco (chop-chop) differs from that of smokers of licit tobacco. The design was a telephone survey, stratified by state, using computer aided telephone interviewing, with households selected by random digit dialing from the telephone white pages. Setting was all Australian states and territories, 1,621 regular tobacco smokers aged 18+ years. Measures were social and personal characteristics of tobacco smokers, smoking histories and patterns, and health status (SF-8 and disability weights). Binary logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with current and lifetime chop-chop use. Compared with licit-only tobacco smokers, current users of chop-chop had significantly greater odds of beginning smoking aged <16 years (odds ratio [OR] 1.65, 95% CI = 1.09-2.50), of reporting below-average social functioning (OR 1.61, 95% CI = 1.06-2.44), and of a measurable disability (OR 1.95, 95% CI = 1.08-3.51). Lifetime chop-chop users were relatively likely to be less than 45 years of age (OR 1.82, 95% CI = 1.38-2.39), report below-average mental health (OR 1.61, 95% CI = 1.22-2.13) and above-average bodily pain (OR 1.40, 95% CI = 1.06-1.85), smoke more than 120 cigarettes/week (OR 1.39, 95% CI = 1.06-1.83), and to have begun smoking aged <16 years (OR 1.33, 95% CI = 1.01-1.75). Current and lifetime users of chop-chop report significantly worse health than smokers of licit tobacco. Investigation of how to communicate this finding to current and potential chop-chop smokers is warranted.

Satisfaction with teaching and learning and the role of psychological need fulfillment

Abstract: – The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to assess participant satisfaction of a teaching and learning experience. Additionally, the way innate psychological needs influence the satisfaction formation process will be examined. – A cross-sectional, quantitative approach was chosen and path analysis and t -tests were used to analyze the data. – Satisfaction is formed by two related constructs, emotions and perception of quality, and together explained 53 percent of the variance in satisfaction. Higher levels of psychological need fulfillment were shown to positively influence emotions and quality perceptions and indirectly influence satisfaction judgements. – These findings have relevance for education and training providers. First, they provide a comprehensive way for educationists to manage and measure satisfaction. – Many teaching and learning evaluations are based on quality judgement and single measure of satisfaction. This study shows the important role positive and negative emotions play in determining satisfaction judgements. Additionally, and for the first time, the influence of different levels of psychological need fulfillment on satisfaction has been reported.

Abstract: In a recent article, Zhang and Hoffman discuss the use of discrete choice logit models in sociological research. In the present article, the authors estimate a multinomial logit model of U.K. Magistrates Courts sentencing using a data set collected by the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO) and test the independence of irrelevant alternatives (IIA) property using six tests. Conducting the tests with the appropriate large s le critical values, the authors find that the acceptance or rejection of IIA depends both on which test and which variant of a given test is used. The authors then use simulation techniques to assess the size and power performance of the tests. The empirical ex le is revisited with the inferences performed using empirical critical values obtained by simulation, and the resultant inferences are compared. The results show that empirical workers should exercise caution when testing for IIA.
