Abstract: Low-cost flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with nanoemitter material from waste open up new opportunities for sustainable technology. The common emitter materials generated from waste are carbon dots (CDs). However, these have poor luminescent properties. Further solid-state emission quenching makes application in display devices challenging. Fabrication of TiO₂ Binary Inverse Opals without Overlayers via the Sandwich-Vacuum Infiltration of Precursor

Abstract: A sandwich-vacuum method was demonstrated for the fabrication of titania (TiO(2)) binary inverse opals with an open surface. In this method, a moisture-stable TiO(2) precursor was backfilled into the interstitial spaces of polystyrene binary colloidal crystals (PS bCCs), which served as a template. Removal of the template by calcination yielded TiO(2) binary inverse opals with a 3D-ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure. Optical reflectance spectra revealed the existence of a pseudostop band gap in the 3DOM TiO(2) s les. The position of the pseudostop band gap shifted to the low-wavelength region as the number ratio of small over large PS spheres was increased in the template. The sandwich-vacuum method proved to be simple and rapid for the fabrication of TiO(2) binary inverse opals without overlayers in large domains. The 3DOM TiO(2) materials were used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of benzoic acid. Results showed that in comparison to TiO(2) nanoparticles prepared under the same sintering conditions, the 3DOM TiO(2) materials displayed enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract: Binary colloidal films of polystyrene (PS) spheres and silica spheres were fabricated with a sequential growth method using differently sized colloidal particles. In particular, we demonstrate the structures formed by a silica monolayer growing on top of a PS monolayer and a silica multilayer growing on top of a PS monolayer. By removal of the bottom PS layers, non-close-packed hexagonal, pentagonal, and square silica arrays were obtained at the original silica/PS interface. The possible formation mechanism of the non-close-packed structure was discussed, which may be used to explain how 3D colloidal crystals grow on patterned substrates.

Tuning Enhancement Efficiency of Multiple Emissive Centers in Graphene Quantum Dots by Core–Shell Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Abstract: Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are emerging luminescent nanomaterials for energy, bioimaging, and optoelectronic applications. However, unlike conventional fluorophores, GQDs contain multiple emissive centers that result in a complex interaction with external electromagnetic fields. Here we utilize core-shell plasmonic nanoparticles to simultaneously enhance and modulate the photoluminescence (PL) intensities and spectral profiles of GQDs. By analyzing the spectral profiles, we show that the emissive centers are highly influenced by the proximity to the metal particles. Under optimal spacer thickness of 25 nm, the overall PL displays a four-fold enhancement compared with a pristine GQD. However, detailed lifetime measurements indicate the presence of midgap states that act as the bottleneck for further enhancement. Our results offer new perspectives for fundamental understanding and new design of functional luminescent materials (e.g., GQDs, graphene oxide, carbon dots) for imaging, sensing, and light harvesting.

Abstract: This review presents the state-of-the-art sludge reduction technologies applied in both wastewater and sludge treatment lines. They include chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical treatment, addition of chemical un-coupler, and predation of protozoa/metazoa in wastewater treatment line, and physical, chemical and biological pretreatment in sludge treatment line. Emphasis was put on their effect on sludge reduction performance, with 10% sludge reduction to zero sludge production in wastewater treatment line and enhanced TS (total solids) or volatile solids removal of 5-40% in sludge treatment line. Free nitrous acid (FNA) technology seems good in wastewater treatment line but it is only under the lab-scale trial. In sludge treatment line, thermal, ultrasonic (<4400kJ/kg TS), FNA pretreatment and temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD) are promising if pathogen inactivation is not a concern. However, thermal pretreatment and TPAD are superior to other pretreatment technologies when pathogen inactivation is required. The new wastewater treatment processes including SANI®, high-rate activated sludge coupled autotrophic nitrogen removal and anaerobic membrane bioreactor coupled autotrophic nitrogen removal also have a great potential to reduce sludge production. In the future, an effort should be put on the effect of sludge reduction technologies on the removal of organic micropollutants and heavy metals.

Binary Colloidal Crystals Fabricated with a Horizontal Deposition Method

Abstract: We describe the use of a horizontal deposition method to prepare large-area binary colloidal crystals (bCCs). Two different sets of binary polystyrene spheres were employed to demonstrate the validity of this method. By varying the number ratios of small spheres with respect to large spheres, the stoichiometric configuration of the bCCs can be altered. Stable corresponding replica structures of the bCCs were also prepared, and the cross-sectional images of the binary inverse opals were obtained. Optical characterization demonstrated the presence of pseudostop bands, which were in agreement with the compositions of the material. The formation of the bCC by such a simple self-assembly method was attributed to the cooperative effect of interparticle electrostatic interactions and geometrical constrictions. This facile fabrication method further enhances the application potential of the bCCs and their inverse porous replicas with a binary pore system in the fields of photonics, solar cells, separations, catalysis, and biosensing.

Yellow-Emitting Carbon Nanodots and Their Flexible and Transparent Films for White LEDs

Abstract: We report carbon nanodots that can be utilized as effective color converting phosphors for the production of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Blue-excitable and yellow-emitting carbon nanodots, functionalized with 3-(imidazolidin-2-on-1-yl)propylmethyldimethoxysilane (IPMDS)-derived moieties (IS-CDs), are synthesized by a novel one-pot reaction in which the products from the initial reaction occurring between urea and 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propylmethyl-dimethoxysilane (AEPMDS) are further treated with citric acid. Distinctive from the majority of carbon nanodots reported previously, IS-CDs emit at 560 nm, under 460 nm excitation, with a quantum yield of 44%. Preliminary toxicity studies, assessed by the Artemia franciscana nauplii (brine shrimp larvae) bioassay, indicate that IS-CDs are largely nontoxic. Furthermore, the IS-CDs form flexible and transparent films without the need of encapsulating agents, and the solid films retain the optical properties of solvated IS-CDs. These features indicate an immense potential for the IS-CDs as an environmental-friendly, blue-excitable carbon nanodot-based phosphor in solid-state lighting devices.

Abstract: Photonic crystals are periodic structures that have the capability to manipulate the photons in the same way as semiconductors do for electrons. The self-assembly strategy that utilizes colloidal crystals as a template to form photonic crystals has received a great deal of recent research interest because it is simple and cost-effective. Experimental studies and theoretical analysis have speculated that capillary forces play a pivotal role in forming the colloidal crystals during the crystal growth process and that particularly during the drying stage the changing of the magnitude of capillary forces is critical to the resultant microstructure. This paper presents a computational analysis of the changing capillary forces, which may throw light on a refined strategy for controlling colloidal crystal growth.

Athermally photoreduced graphene oxides for three-dimensional holographic images

Abstract: The emerging graphene-based material, an atomic layer of aromatic carbon atoms with exceptional electronic and optical properties, has offered unprecedented prospects for developing flat two-dimensional displaying systems. Here, we show that reduced graphene oxide enabled write-once holograms for wide-angle and full-colour three-dimensional images. This is achieved through the discovery of subwavelength-scale multilevel optical index modulation of athermally reduced graphene oxides by a single femtosecond pulsed beam. This new feature allows for static three-dimensional holographic images with a wide viewing angle up to 52 degrees. In addition, the spectrally flat optical index modulation in reduced graphene oxides enables wavelength-multiplexed holograms for full-colour images. The large and polarization-insensitive phase modulation over π in reduced graphene oxide composites enables to restore vectorial wavefronts of polarization discernible images through the vectorial diffraction of a reconstruction beam. Therefore, our technique can be leveraged to achieve compact and versatile holographic components for controlling light.

Carbon dots functionalized by organosilane with double-sided anchoring for nanomolar Hg²⁺ detection

Abstract: Surface functional groups on carbon dots (CDs) play a critical role in defining their photoluminescence properties and functionalities. A new kind of organosilane-functionalized CDs (OS-CDs) were formed by a low temperature (150°C) solvothermal synthesis of citric acid in N-(β-aminoethyl)-γ-aminopropylmethyl-dimethoxysilane (AEAPMS). Uniquely, the as-synthesized OS-CDs have dual long chain functional groups with both NH2 and Si(OCH3)3 as terminal moieties. Double sided anchoring of AEAPMS on CDs occurs, facilitated by the water produced (and confined at the interface between CDs and solvent) when citric acid condenses into the carbon core. The resultant OS-CDs are multi-solvent dispersible, and more significantly, they exhibit excellent selectivity and sensitivity to Hg(2+) with a linear detection range of 0-50 nM and detection limit of 1.35 nM. The sensitivity and selectivity to Hg(2+) is preserved in highly complex fluids with a detection limit of 1.7 nM in spiked 1 M NaCl solution and a detection limit of 50 nM in municipal wastewater effluent. The results show that the OS-CDs synthesised by the solvothermal method in AEAPMS may be used as an effective Hg(2+) sensor in practical situations.

Detection of regional DNA methylation using DNA-graphene affinity interactions

Abstract: We report a new method for the detection of regional DNA methylation using base-dependent affinity interaction (i.e., adsorption) of DNA with graphene. Due to the strongest adsorption affinity of guanine bases towards graphene, bisulfite-treated guanine-enriched methylated DNA leads to a larger amount of the adsorbed DNA on the graphene-modified electrodes in comparison to the adenine-enriched unmethylated DNA. The level of the methylation is quantified by monitoring the differential pulse voltammetric current as a function of the adsorbed DNA. The assay is sensitive to distinguish methylated and unmethylated DNA sequences at single CpG resolution by differentiating changes in DNA methylation as low as 5%. Furthermore, this method has been used to detect methylation levels in a collection of DNA s les taken from oesophageal cancer tissues.

Abstract: The halide perovskite nanocrystals (P‐NCs) can address a plethora of issues of the light‐emission technologies, due to its low temperature processing. To successfully employ P‐NCs for light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), one needs to resolve the issues of stability of the LEDs. The stability of device can be achieved by charge balance of electrons and holes recombination in active material. To investigate this herein, a self‐assembled carbon dots (CDs) layer is fabricated from waste small strands of human hair. The self‐assembled CDs layer is used beneath P‐NCs layer to reduce the band‐off set for hole transport, thus balancing the electron and holes carrier in active layer. The layer is used as an active light‐emitting layer to fabricate a LED device that exhibits green luminescence of 4800 cd m −2 at a current efficiency of 10.7 cd A −1 and external quantum efficiency of 4.8%. The LED exhibits operational stability of nearly 200 h. The same film is used to demonstrate a flexible device with maximum luminescence of 2259 cd m −2 , with a high current density of 474 mA cm −2 , current efficiency of 1.37 cd A −1 and a low turn‐on voltage of 3.5 V. All the display devices are measured in air without encapsulation.

Monochromatic Blue and Switchable Blue-Green Carbon Quantum Dots by Room-Temperature Air Plasma Processing

Abstract: Carbon quantum dots (CQDs, C‐dots or CDs) are an emerging type of nanomaterial which has received immense attention due to their numerous applications. However, most of the reported CQDs in literature typically emit single emission peak under an excitation. Multipeak emissions without any complicated techniques will be ideal for various applications in the fields of ratiometric sensing, optoelectronics, and multifunctional bio‐imaging systems. Here, a fast, effective, and single‐step method is developed for the bulk synthesis of CQDs using atmospheric pressure air plasmas. Structural, morphological, and chemical properties are characterized by advanced analytical techniques. The CQDs have an average diameter of about 3 nm with a narrow size distribution. Emission wavelengths of 470 nm for blue emissive CQDs and 515 nm for green emissive CQDs are observed. Concentration dependency of the CQDs suggests that the switchable mechanism is due to the formation of PTSA excimers. Dual‐emissive CQDs have the potential to be used in bi‐channel ratiometric determination for metal ions, pH sensing, tumor diagnosis and detection, and solid‐state lighting materials. The proof‐of‐principle demonstration of the use of dual‐emissive CQDs (DCQDs) as a fluorescent sensor of Cu 2+ ions is also presented to highlight the possible applications.

Emerging technologies for PFOS/PFOA degradation and removal: A review

Abstract: Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are highly recalcitrant anthropogenic chemicals that are ubiquitously present in the environment and are harmful to humans. Typical water and wastewater treatment processes (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration) are proven to be largely ineffective, while adsorption with granular activated carbon (GAC) has been the chief option to capture them from aqueous sources followed by incineration. However, this process is time-consuming, and produces additional solid waste and air pollution. Treatment methods for PFOS and PFOA generally follow two routes: (1) removal from source and reduce the risk (2) degradation. Emerging technologies focusing on degradation are critically reviewed in this contribution. Various processes such as bioremediation, electrocoagulation, foam fractionation, sonolysis, photocatalysis, mechanochemical, electrochemical degradation, beams of electron and plasma have been developed and studied in the past decade to address PFAS crisis. The underlying mechanisms of these PFAS degradation methods have been categorized. Two main challenges have been identified, namely complexity in large scale operation and the release of toxic byproducts. Based on the literature survey, we have provided a strength-weakness-opportunity-threat (SWOT) analysis and quantitative rating on their efficiency, environmental impact and technology readiness.
