The Relationship Between Smartphone Use, Insomnia, Stress, and Anxiety Among University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: The rapid increase in the number of smartphone users has raised concern about the negative psychosocial and physical effects of this use. A descriptive cross-sectional design was conducted to investigate the relationship between smartphone use, anxiety and insomnia among university students. A convenience s le of 404 students from one public university completed questionnaires with items from the Smartphone Addiction Scale, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and the Insomnia Severity Index, with some demographic data. High smartphone addition scale score was significantly associated with higher anxiety and stress scores of the Depression Anxiety Stress scale, and higher insomnia severity index score. The findings support the importance of an intervention program to promote appropriate use of smartphones and to improve sleep and psychological symptoms such as stress and anxiety among university students.
Stress Factors, Stress Levels, and Coping Mechanisms among University Students

Abstract: Aims. To explore university students’ levels of stress, stressors, and their coping style. Methods. A cross-sectional correlational design with a convenience s le (n = 676) of university students who completed the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Coping Strategies Indicator (CSI) was used. Findings. Overall, two-thirds of the participant reported moderate levels of stress. Students with chronic illness, living alone, low CGPA, and having exams today experienced a statistically higher mean level of stress. Students who are living alone used the “avoidance” method more significantly and the “social support” method significantly less compared with students who are living with their families and friends. Conclusion. This study concurs with others that university students are prone to distress. To our knowledge, this is the first study in the region to explore the students’ coping skills. Some of the employed coping and associated factors could be used to lay the groundwork for evidence-based prevention and mitigation.
Health-Related Stigma, Social Support, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Care Actions Among Adults With Sickle Cell Disease in Oman

Abstract: Stigma contributes to the burden of in iduals and families affected by Sickle cell disease (SCD) and causes delay in appropriate care seeking. The aim of this study is to examine the levels and associations between stigma, social support, self-efficacy, and self-care actions among adult patients with SCD in Oman using a cross-sectional, correlational design. Of the 264 participants, 56.1% ( n = 148) were males, with mean age of 30.1 years ( SD 7.7). Half of the participants were married, and 88.3% had no other associated diseases. The results demonstrate that patients in Oman suffer from health-related stigma. However, social support, self-efficacy, and self-care actions were reported to be high and correlated with several clinical and demographic variables. Based on the results, effective, low-cost interventions such as psycho-educational groups, in idual counseling, or group therapies might be developed. They can promote belief in enhanced efficacy and improved SCD adaptation, thereby increasing patient, and provider satisfaction.

Quality of Life and Its Predictors among Patients with Selected Chronic Diseases

Abstract: Background. Quality of life (QoL) is an important measure to understand the effect of diseases on patients’ daily living. Yet, the research on QoL among patients with chronic diseases in Oman is scarce. This study aimed to assess the level and determine the predictors of QoL among patients with chronic diseases in Oman. Methods. A cross-sectional correlational descriptive was run among 340 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic heart failure, and/or end-stage renal disease. Results. Participants’ mean age was 60.6 years (SD ± 14.4) and the majority were males (63.5%). The highest mean scores were emotional well-being (mean = 85.2, SD = ±11.2) and role limitations due to personal or emotional problems (mean = 83.2, SD = ±35.8). In addition, COPD patients reported the lowest scores on the QoL questionnaire. Having a high score on the Karnofsky Performance Status Scale (KPSS) and being married predicted a higher score in the mental and physical domains of QoL, while having a higher total symptom number and COPD predicted a lower score in the mental domain. Older age, higher total symptom number, and a higher distress level predicted a lower score on the physical domain of QoL. Conclusion. The results call for a need to improve the QoL among the patients with chronic disease, including symptom management plans, self-management programmes, and training to enhance their own perception of QoL. Furthermore, symptom management plans are highly needed.
