Abstract: This article concerns the definition and identification of qualitative spatial relationships for the full and partial enclosure of spatial regions. The article precisely defines three relationships between regions—“surrounds,” “engulfs,” and “envelops”—highlighting the correspondence to similar definitions in the literature. An efficient algorithm capable of identifying these qualitative spatial relations in a network of dynamic (mobile) geosensor nodes is developed and tested. The algorithms are wholly decentralized, and operate in-network with no centralized control. The algorithms are also “coordinate-free,” able to operate in distributed spatial computing environments where coordinate locations are expensive to capture or otherwise unavailable. Experimental evaluation of the algorithms designed demonstrates the efficiency of the approach. Although the algorithm communication complexity is dominated by an overall worst-case O ( n 2 ) leader election algorithm, the experiments show in practice an average-case complexity approaching linear, O ( n 1.1 ).

Abstract: This article explores the design, implementation, and querying of a prototype system for automated spatial reasoning for geospatial intelligence applications, called NEXUS. The system combines multiple different reasoning components that can support a wide range of spatiotemporal queries. Fundamental to the requirements of intelligence analysts is the need to provide explanations of system outputs that help better inform users and engender trust in the system. The NEXUS architecture leverages semantic web technologies, and in particular the Simple Event Model and PROV‐O ontologies, to support queries not only about reasoner inferences, but also explanations as to why the system arrived at a particular conclusion. The manipulation of location reports in marine automatic identification system (AIS) data is used as a running ex le to demonstrate the approach. The range of queries developed illustrates both the detection of suspicious activities and explanations of the inference processes used to identify those activities.

Real-time estimation of wildfire perimeters from curated crowdsourcing

Abstract: Real-time information about the spatial extents of evolving natural disasters, such as wildfire or flood perimeters, can assist both emergency responders and the general public during an emergency. However, authoritative information sources can suffer from bottlenecks and delays, while user-generated social media data usually lacks the necessary structure and trustworthiness for reliable automated processing. This paper describes and evaluates an automated technique for real-time tracking of wildfire perimeters based on publicly available “curated” crowdsourced data about telephone calls to the emergency services. Our technique is based on established data mining tools and can be adjusted using a small number of intuitive parameters. Experiments using data from the devastating Black Saturday wildfires (2009) in Victoria, Australia, demonstrate the potential for the technique to detect and track wildfire perimeters automatically, in real time and with moderate accuracy. Accuracy can be further increased through combination with other authoritative demographic and environmental information, such as population density and dynamic wind fields. These results are also independently validated against data from the more recent 2014 Mickleham-Dalrymple wildfires.

Abstract: Indigenous knowledge of place is not well‐served by today's digital geospatial technologies, such as spatial data, maps, spatial databases, and GIS. This paper aims to identify and explore new connections between Indigenous knowledge of place and digital geospatial technologies. Our analysis is structured around three key gaps in past work: (a) the overrepresentation of digital data about space, rather than knowledge of place (b) a lack of facility to differentiate access to knowledge and enable Indigenous data sovereignty (c) a lack of facility to support and sustain relationships between Indigenous and non‐Indigenous peoples. The paper further identifies and explores recent research topics in the field of geographic information science (GI science) with relevance to addressing these gaps. This includes identifying new serendipitous synergies with previously unconnected research areas, such as research into location privacy, uncertainty, qualitative spatial reasoning, or distributed spatial computing. The conclusions acknowledge that our retrospective approach is unlikely to lead to radical reformulation of geospatial technologies. Nevertheless, we argue that identifying technological opportunities could offer a pragmatic pathway to more rapidly bootstrap new approaches, beyond simply technological “fixes.”

Abstract: In this chapter, the author raises a number of issues surrounding the ever-growing capabilities of geoinformatics. Location privacy can be defined as the claim of in iduals to determine for themselves when, how, and to what extent information about their geographic location is communicated to others. Location privacy has become an especially important issue in geoinformatics because of the emergence of location-aware computing. This implication of the interaction between these technology and personal rights is explored in this chapter.

AOI-shapes: An Efficient Footprint Algorithm to Support Visualization of User-defined Urban Areas of Interest

Abstract: Understanding urban areas of interest (AOIs) is essential in many real-life scenarios, and such AOIs can be computed based on the geographic points that satisfy user queries. In this article, we study the problem of efficient and effective visualization of user-defined urban AOIs in an interactive manner. In particular, we first define the problem of user-defined AOI visualization based on a real estate data visualization scenario, and we illustrate why a novel footprint method is needed to support the visualization. After extensively reviewing existing “footprint” methods, we propose a parameter-free footprint method, named AOI-shapes, to capture the boundary information of a user-defined urban AOI. Next, to allow interactive query refinements by the user, we propose two efficient and scalable algorithms to incrementally generate urban AOIs by reusing existing visualization results. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments with both synthetic and real-world datasets to demonstrate the quality and efficiency of the proposed methods.

iHVI: AN OPEN-SOURCE TOOLKIT FOR CONSTRUCTING INTEGRATED HEAT VULNERABILITY INDEX IN AUSTRALIA

Abstract: Abstract. To tackle the increasing issue of heat risk in Australia and pressure of population growth, this project aimed to establish a first nationwide dynamic and interactive heat vulnerability assessment toolkit. The toolkit integrated multiple data sources, cloud computing, and Web GIS technologies to deliver cool intelligence for more heat resilient Australian cities and suburbs. A cloud-based open-source tool, iGEE, was first developed to derive land surface temperature (LST), NDBI (normalized difference built-up index) and NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) from multiple satellite imagery on Google Earth Engine (GEE), a no-code web application allowing users to retrieve satellite data for a large area at fine scales. Following that, a python-based desktop app was then developed to calculate an integrated Heat Vulnerability Index (iHVI) for any cities and area at a fine scale of Statistical Area 1 (SA1). The iHVI toolkit allows users to construct heat sensitivity, heat adaptive capability indicators, and composite heat vulnerability index, which enables modelling of the relationships between heat, environmental and socioeconomic factors.
