Abstract: Magnesium nanoparticles were synthesized by using organo magnesium precursor. By changing synthesis parameters such as synthesis time and temperature, various morphologies of the magnesium nanoparticles were obtained. S le synthesized at 250°C for 30 min exhibited agglomerated nanosheets of magnesium whereas the s le obtained at 2 hour had in idual particles consisted of core/shell structure. The corresponding hydrogen storage properties of these s les were also influenced by the morphology. Hydrogen desorption data revealed that s les prepared at 2 hour could release hydrogen at lower temperature (343°C) than those s les prepared at 30 min and 1 hour.

Direct Production of 5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural via Catalytic Conversion of Simple and Complex Sugars over Phosphated TiO2

Abstract: A water-THF biphasic system containing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was found to enable the efficient synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from a variety of sugars (simple to complex) using phosphated TiO2 as a catalyst. Fructose and glucose were selectively converted to HMF resulting in 98 % and 90 % yield, respectively, at 175 °C. Cellobiose and sucrose also gave rise to high HMF yields of 94 % and 98 %, respectively, at 180 °C. Other sugar variants such as starch (potato and rice) and cellulose were also investigated. The yields of HMF from starch (80-85 %) were high, whereas cellulose resulted in a modest yield of 33 %. Direct transformation of cellulose to HMF in significant yield (86 %) was assisted by mechanocatalytic depolymerization-ball milling of acid-impregnated cellulose. This effectively reduced cellulose crystallinity and particle size, forming soluble cello-oligomers this is responsible for the enhanced substrate-catalytic sites contact and subsequent rate of HMF formation. During catalyst recyclability, P-TiO2 was observed to be reusable for four cycles without any loss in activity. We also investigated the conversion of the cello-oligomers to HMF in a continuous flow reactor. Good HMF yield (53 %) was achieved using a water-methyl isobutyl ketone+NMP biphasic system.

Catalytic conversion of methane into benzene over ceria–zirconia‐promoted molybdenum‐supported zeolite for methane dehydroaromatization

Abstract: The promotional effect of mixed ceria–zirconia oxides (CZO) over the Mo/HZSM‐5 catalyst for methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction was studied. The surface and structural properties of the synthesized catalyst were thoroughly exemplified using various microscopic and spectroscopic tools, and the correlation between catalytic properties and its performance for MDA reaction is discussed. The impregnation of CZO solid solution on Mo/HZSM‐5 was monitored to give an excellent catalytic performance and improved benzene production rate (4.5 μmol/gcat.s) related to the conventionally prepared Mo/HZSM‐5 (3.1 μmol/gcat.s) catalyst. In addition, a significant reduction in coke formation was examined in the CZO‐modified Mo/HZSM‐5 catalyst. The prevailing comprehension for higher catalytic activity could be because of the redox properties of CZO‐deposited Mo/HZSM‐5, which acts as a selective oxygen supplier and performs hydrogen combustion during the reaction, which is indirectly probed by residual gas analysis‐mass spectroscopy, oxygen‐temperature programmed desorption, and hydrogen‐temperature programmed reduction analysis. The selective hydrogen combustion prevents the over‐oxidation of aromatic species formed during the reaction, whereas the generated steam helps in reducing the coke content deposition in the MDA reaction. Thus, the advantage of CZO‐incorporated Mo/HZSM‐5 is manifested as it promotes the reaction equilibrium to shift towards the formation of benzene which is favourable for MDA reaction.

Fuel Gas Production From Self-Sustaining Smouldering Combustion of Lignocellulosic Waste

Abstract: Smouldering combustion has shown to be an effective application for soil remediation and as a waste treatment method for solids with high moisture content. The experimental set-up of smouldering combustion reactors is similar to autothermal fixed-bed gasification, updraft reactor configuration. In this study, smouldering experiments were conducted using lignocellulosic agricultural waste. The moisture content of lignocellulosic biomass was varied between 10 % to 50 %. Air flux was varied between 1.8 and 7.4 cm/s. Experiments were also conducted with varying oxygen concentration in the airflow (3.6 – 21 %), addition of sand (4 and 8 g/g) and other lignocellulosic material (wood pellets, and residual berry plant). Fuel gas with maximum H 2 , CO, CH 4 , CO 2 concentrations of 7.7, 32.6, 2.3, and 57.4 % (N 2 free) respectively were obtained with 10 % moisture content and 7.4 cm/s air flux. The smouldering yielded 1.24 Nm 3 /kg feed_dry of gas with calorific value of 1.82 MJ/Nm 3 (HHV).
