Funded Activity Summary

Extraction and purification of a novel glycoprotein with antiviral activity from an Australian mollusc. Our aim is to develop the science that will enable the transformation of Australian seafood industry, a world leader in mollusc harvesting, into a value-added health and nutrition industry. We will develop a cost-effective technology for the extraction and production of high purity haemocyanin from the biomass produced in a Tasmanian seafood manufacturing process. We will demonstrate the potential of using haemocyanin for promoting the health and well-being of patients affected by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and the human papilloma virus (HPV). New knowledge gained from the project will place Australia in the forefront of global treatment of infectious disease research and boost export earnings derived from molluscs' waste materials.
