Funded Activity Summary

The effects of fatigue on safety and performance in the short haul, light trucking sector. Unlike the long distance heavy truck sector, very little is known about the causes of driver fatigue in the short distance, light truck sector. This is in spite of crash statistics that show that crashes involving light trucks tend to be relatively severe, accounting for ten percent of fatal crashes in NSW in 2000. This study will look at the effects of fatigue on performance and safety in the light truck sector and attempt to identify sources of fatigue and potential organisational and behavioural approaches to reducing it.
