Funded Activity Summary

Cyclicity in magmatic arc systems. This project aims to determine how active volcanic continental margins, such as the Ring of Fire, evolves and control the origin of new continental crust. This project expects to generate new knowledge regarding how continents form in such margins using new findings that suggest they undergo cyclical heating and magmatism. The intended outcome is a finely resolved thermal-magmatic temporal history of an ideal example of such a margin. This should provide significant benefits, such as an understanding of how new continental crust forms, and increased predictability of when in the evolution of continental margins significant copper and gold deposits form.
