Funded Activity Summary

Changing administrative territory. This project analyses how China changes subnational administrative territory – establishing and enlarging cities and eliminating others – to develop regional economies, establish power bases, and govern society. Using systematic data on changes to administrative divisions, this project will analyse how China strategically changes subnational territory to achieve political, economic and social goals – aligning the territorial space of the state with economy and citizenship. Results from research in four cities are expected to provide strategic information for establishing city-to-city partnerships as well as insights for economic development and national security.
