Funded Activity Summary

The Formation and Emission of Soot Nanoparticles from Turbulent Flames. This project aims to develop experimental and numerical approaches that will enable designers to control the formation and emission of soot nanoparticles from combustors. Ultrafine particles polluting our atmosphere originate from combustion sources and are now confirmed to pose serious health risks. As a result, new regulations will impose strict limits on the number of particles that can be emitted from engines. Satisfying such regulations requires a yet unavailable understanding of the mechanisms that control the evolution of soot in turbulent flames. This project plans to use laser diagnostic methods to construct the experimental framework that will facilitate model development. The resulting predictive capabilities would contribute to a platform that enables engineers to optimise combustor designs.
