How are self-assembled gels formed? From trial-and-error to rational molecular design. By solving fundamental questions on how a new class of smart materials called self-assembled gels are formed, models will be created that allow prediction of their properties. This will significantly enhance the scope of application of self-assembled gels in a range of new areas including for encapsulated drug delivery and stem cell therapy.
