Rethinking the history of Soviet Stalinism. This project will provide a more sophisticated understanding of the complexities of Stalin's Russia by considering critically the data now available in Soviet archives. It will explain how the system evolved in response to real social, economic and international problems, rather than exclusively in response to individual or psychological factors.
