Funded Activity Summary

The making of urban citizens: social inclusion and division in China's new urban areas. China's economic development and social stability are of immense importance to Australia's national interest. Through its academic output and dissemination, this project will increase Australia's understanding of China's urbanisation processes and the potential for political conflict it entails. It will also expand academic relationships with China, contribute to building Australia's research capacity by training two PhD scholars and raise the profile of Australia's China Studies internationally. Finally, in a theoretical sense, the understandings of processes of urban citizenship in China will have implications for Australia's own policies on social inculsion.
