Funded Activity Summary

High-Performance Magnesium Diboride-Based Nanocomposite Conductors. Magnesium diborides (MgB2) is a newly discovered superconductor with a record high critical temperature (39 K) among the low-temperature superconductors. Superior properties of MgB2 make it very promising for engineering applications above 20 K. This project aims to develop a novel, low-cost, energy-saving, and industrially-feasible technique to make MgB2-based nanocomposite conductors that may overcome the critical problems existing in the material. The outcomes of this project will be the development of a new fabrication method and improved performance of MgB2-based conductors. The results also will increase our understanding of flux pinning at the nanoscale.
