Funded Activity Summary

Forgetting and remembering the past: Inhibition and facilitation of autobiographical memories. Although autobiographical memory is central to human cognition and memory, and important for our sense of self and psychological well-being, it remains poorly understood. Across five years and fifteen experiments, this project provides the first test of a major theory of autobiographical memory and examines cognitive control processes that inhibit or facilitate access to memories of the past. The project will significantly extend our understanding of the nature and function of personal memory, provide data relevant to debates about forgetting in clinical disorders, and refine a theory that can guide future investigations in this area.
