Funded Activity Summary

Supporting unmanned aerial vehicle communications in cellular systems. This project aims to systematically study the fundamental theory and practical methods for supporting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) utilising both existing 4G cellular systems and future 5G-and-beyond cellular systems. Supporting UAV communications in cellular systems is a promising technology to unlock numerous UAV applications without the need to establish control infrastructure. This project will develop new channel models, analyse the fundamental performance limits, and propose key enabling techniques. A proof-of-concept experiment will be performed to evaluate the proposed designs. The outcomes of this project are expected to fundamentally advance the knowledge of cellular-connected UAV communications and create new business opportunities for both cellular and UAV industries.
