Funded Activity Summary

International policing and civilian protection in UN peace operations. This project aims to evaluate how police implement mandates for the protection of civilians in United Nations peace operations. Police peacekeepers are deployed to protect hundreds of thousands of civilians in increasingly complex conflict situations. However, their contributions to civilian protection have not been systematically evaluated. Through a structured comparison of five missions, the project will analyse what works, what does not, assess the factors that determine these outcomes and identify opportunities to improve effectiveness in future. The expected outcome is an evidence-based contribution to strategy, doctrine and tactics, interoperability guidance and planning for peace operations.
