Funded Activity Summary

Privatizing Maritime Security in Southeast Asia: Drivers and Consequences. In contemporary Southeast Asia, key maritime security roles have been contracted out to private military and security companies. These companies are largely unstudied by scholars and often unaccountable to the public. This project will consider: the kind of work conducted by private military and security companies in maritime Southeast Asia; the global and local structural and political factors, which lead to the privatisation of maritime security; and, the implications for security governance. Considering these issues will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the security sectors of Southeast Asian countries and will allow a more precise assessment of the maritime security situation in this region.
