Funded Activity Summary

To further knowledge and research aimed at better understanding the etiology and the course of underlying mechanisms that contribute to suicide risk, and imminent suicidal behaviour, we aim to make use of emerging technology i.e., Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA) to capture fine grained assessments of suicidal ideations and behaviours at the frequency at which they occur. In particular, we will co-design and then pilot test EMA protocol to capture individual proximal risk and protective factors associated with immediate suicide ideations, behaviours and associated mechanisms (e.g., mood, stressors) among young people presenting to suicide prevention aftercare service. This research will generate new knowledge regarding key areas in suicide prevention research. The fine-grained approach towards capturing fluctuations and changes in intensity of suicidal thinking will provide information about underlying mechanism and inform future development of novel "just-in-time' interventions that can be tailored for individuals and delivered in real-time to participants' smartphones.
