Funded Activity Summary

First Decadal Plan for Australian Space Science. ``Space science' refers both to the science of space, meaning everything in our solar system beyond about 10 km of Earth's mean surface, and to the science that can be done from space. The Australian Academy of Science (AAS), through its National Committee for Space Science (NCSS), is developing the first Decadal Plan for Australian Space Science. This proposal’s aim is to finalize and release the Plan and to start implementing it. The proposal involves researching the capabilities, strengths and weaknesses of Australian space science and its institutions, identifying the scientific goals and questions relevant to existing expertise and the National Research Priorities, determining the research and strategic opportunities available domestically and internationally, and combining these into a national strategic plan. Expected outcomes are: (1) A first Decadal Plan for Australian Space Science, developed and approved by both AAS and the Australian space science community. (2) Formal publication and presentation of the Plan by AAS to the Government, media, Australian public and scientific communities. (3) Workshops to start implementing the Plan, with emphases on: scientific progress, strategic priorities, financial management, and resources for Australian space scientists that participate in the international space effort with strong Government, industry, public and international support and produce associated national benefits. .
