Summary
Over 100,000 children attend family day care in the homes of 12,000 providers in Australia. Family day carers work under challenging conditions and many carers leave the profession annually. The working conditions, mental health and job stress of family day carers and how their mental health may relate to quality of care has not been investigated. This PhD study will examine these issues and explore if and how a systems approach can improve family day carer mental health and job satisfaction.

Almost one third of registered motor vehicles in Australia are used for work purposes, the implications of this research namely, estimating the magnitude and identifying organisational determinants associated with work-related road traffic injury are substantial. Responding to the rural skills crisis: Modelling volunteer motivations and incentives to attract retired/semi-retired professionals to volunteer in rural areas. This project contributes directly to Promoting and Maintaining Good Health: Ageing well, ageing productively by placing a high value on the skills of older Australians and encouraging them to remain productive into retirement by sharing these skills. Creating healthy social environments is essential to preventing mental illness. Child care is a work and care environment that is likely to influence providers’ and children’s mental health. This project uses national surveys and interviews with providers and child care services to understand how child care work environments impact on the mental health of children and providers. This knowledge will inform organisational and government changes to support good mental health in child care.

Summary
Reducing the number of Australians with mental health problems is now a major priority for policy makers. This project targets young adults struggling with stressors in their work and family lives. The study will enhance our understanding of the work and family life experiences of 2000 young adults over a period 12 years (1999-2011) to find out how major life events such as relationship breakdown, having a baby, and losing your job, impact on the mental health of young Australians.
Women Consider Retirement: A Critical Investigation of Attitudes Towards Work, Ageing and Retirement in Three Generations of Australian Women. The broad aim of this project is to investigate what work and retirement mean for women as they age and to consider the implications of these attitudes, intentions and experiences for government policy, especially given current concerns about workforce maintenance in view of population ageing.
The project will:

Compression of one of the major nerves at the wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome) is a very common condition that significantly impacts on the well-being of the patient. To date, there is no good evidence that traditionally advocated interventions are effective in the long term. This project will evaluate the effects of a novel, active treatment strategy and will investigate the underlying mechanisms that may be associated with exercises that aim to mobilise the nerve and tendons at the wrist.
