Contemporary ecological threats from historical pollution events and their modification by environmental conditions. Many Australian ports have contaminated sediments that are a legacy of industrial pollution. The resuspension of these sediments through shipping or dredging activity represents an obvious, yet unsubstantiated, threat to the biodiversity and health of marine communities living well above the seafloor. Turbulence: physical modelling and application to aquatic ecosystem functions. Turbulent fluid motions in aquatic systems are critical for many aspects of water health. This project will quantify the effects of these motions in an unprecedented way by addressing the long-standing problem of turbulence, and the outcomes will be applicable to the essential task of strengthening Australia’s water security.
Combining mathematical programming and constraint programming to solve large-scale integrated scheduling problems. This project will target major savings in the airline industry, with resulting benefits for others such as tourism. The efficient use of airline fuel, which will be directly addressed in the project, is very important for the environment. The algorithms developed can improve cost and quality of service for Australian transportation, manufacturing and other industries.
