High resolution recording and analysis will exploit the full potential of motion capture with progress towards automatic recognition of gesture and, eventually, real-time systems. Automatic tracking and recognition systems are in high demand and the interlacing of data from multiple modes is now computationally achievable. SeeHear! will be coded using techniques in multimodal fusion - tracking of bodies will be enhanced by locating and recognizing facial features, and a learning algorithm used to classify gesture from patterns of force and physiological response. In the future, full interactivity will be achieved by interconnecting visual and auditory data with a flow on to applications in the performing arts, rehabilitation and security.Read moreRead less

The project aims to aesthetically redefine engagement with the plant collection at Royal Botanic Gardens Herbarium (RBG) Sydney and to communicate its artistic, cultural and heritage value to the public through a Public Program of creative arts case studies. It's expected that new insights will arise from an environmental art methodology utilising the digitisation of the Herbarium specimens, so that audiences can interactively experience the plant archive through narratives that activate plants as underpinning ecosystems. Benefits to partners RBG, Bundanon Trust and Open Humanities Press will include the digital expansion of audience engagement with the Herbarium at RBG and Mt Annan and communication of collection’s significance.Read moreRead less

This project seeks funding for the development of a blueprint for an authoritative Dictionary of Australian Artists Online (DAAO). Based on a conceptual framework originated by Joan Kerr in her Dictionary of Australian Artists, the DAAO integrates existing online research with information updated continuously by editorial amendment from new entries generated in scholarly research. Drawing upon the online publishing services, databases and existing archives of the National Library of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia the DAAO provides both a unique opportunity for scholarly contribution and a definitive source of open access information on Australian artists.Read moreRead less
A new theory of Aboriginal art. The paradigms developed by scholars have a huge impact on the value of art. After the Australian artworld repositioned Aboriginal art from the frame of 'primitive art' to that of contemporary art, the price of and market for Aboriginal art increased enormously. However, Aboriginal art failed to penetrate the international contemporary artworld because the paradigms of contemporary art within which it was framed were outmoded. Through examining the production of Aboriginal art from the perspectives of its producers and recent globalised contemporary art practices, this project aims to develop a new theory of Aboriginal art that is more aligned with the thinking of current curators who set the agenda at the upper end of the market.Read moreRead less
Perceiving and tracking moving objects. Processing and tracking moving objects poses challenges for human perception. To succeed, visual processing must accumulate analyses of the object from its different positions. Perceptual experiments will reveal human limits and yield insights into the underlying mechanisms, providing a basis for understanding object tracking in tasks like driving.

The aim of the study is to extend the evidence-based approach we have developed for speed management (cognitive integration speed management training) to hazard management, thereby developing cognitive integration hazard management training for young drivers. Hence, this study is specifically designed to curb the alarming trend in young driver fatalities on Australian roads. The results of the research will provide clear direction to road authorities and driver training providers as to effective training strategies to improve young driver training, and ultimately improve road safety with this vulnerable population.Read moreRead less

This project aims to create the next generation of experts in Australia’s policing and national security agencies, by improving crime scene evidence interpretation. Agencies are under pressure to develop more rigorous training practices that go beyond mere intuition and tradition. This project will use a novel approach that directs learning toward the most diagnostic perceptual cues. Expected outcomes include a solid empirical basis for national training programs designed to create experts that are accurate, reliable, and continuously improving. Improving the training of experts will ensure the integrity of forensics as evidentiary tools available to police, lead to more reliable courtroom convictions and help safeguard Australia from terrorism and crime.Read moreRead less
