Filters reveal what flicker conceals: temporal processing in the human visual system. I have recently discovered a new form of camouflage using 10Hz luminance flicker. This project will quantify this effect and examine the extent to which it generalises across colour and spatial dimensions and to video sequences depicting natural scenes. This project will quantify this effect and examine the extent to which it generalises across colour and spatial dimensions and to video sequences depicting natural scenes. This information is expected to provide foundational information to technologies relating to national security that rely on visual concealment. This research will examine the extent to which filtering out these camouflaging frequencies enhances our sensitivity to low temporal frequency information. This decamouflaging aspect of my research is expected to improve the clarity of digital video-based technologies including ultrasound, educational, info-tainment and defence applicationsRead moreRead less

The equipment establishes an integrated movement analysis laboratory and audience response facility to support and extend ongoing collaborative research projects that investigate human visual and auditory communication through gestures of voice and body. This laboratory will allow recording and analysis of fine and gross motor activity in: caregiver-infant and therapist-client interaction; auditory-visual speech perception; audience reactions to gesture and dance. The audience response facility, a portable system of small keypads programmed to record discrete and continuous responses, brings precision to recording psychological responses in a naturalistic setting. The combined equipment allows concerted investigation of human communicative gesture.Read moreRead less

The proposed studies provide an extensive research program into audio-visual speech processing and person identification: key components of face-to-face communication. The likely impact and benefits of the project concern its contribution to perceptual theory (linking signal, brain and behaviour) and its practical implications: For determining the viability of multimodal biometric identification procedures by assessing the distinctiveness and permanence of AV speech characteristics. In the development of a visual dubbing technique that has potential for communication in noisy environments (and for the deaf) and for the development of a morphable model for AV presentation that has application for both first and second language learning.Read moreRead less
Can Some Positive Emotions Increase Anger? The project will test the idea that high approach-motivated positive emotions (desire, determination) will intensify anger, whereas low approach-motivated positive emotions (satisfaction, amusement) will reduce anger. Anger and high approach-motivated emotions are similar in that they impel the person to move toward, or to approach. Thus, high approach-motivated positive emotions may blend with anger and make it more intense. The project is significant ....Can Some Positive Emotions Increase Anger? The project will test the idea that high approach-motivated positive emotions (desire, determination) will intensify anger, whereas low approach-motivated positive emotions (satisfaction, amusement) will reduce anger. Anger and high approach-motivated emotions are similar in that they impel the person to move toward, or to approach. Thus, high approach-motivated positive emotions may blend with anger and make it more intense. The project is significant because it aims to suggest, contrary to past ideas, that some positive emotions may increase anger. The project is innovative conceptually and methodologically as it aims to reveal that some positive emotions may increase anger-related responses.Read moreRead less
Developing a process model of emotion management using experience sampling. Little is known about the underlying processes of emotional intelligence, as existing research uses descriptive structural models rather than explanatory process models. Little is known about the underlying processes of emotional intelligence, as existing research uses descriptive structural models rather than explanatory process models. This project aims to produce a within-person process model of emotion management, the cornerstone skill of emotional intelligence. The project aims to: test the model with experience sampling; test the causal direction of the model with experimental manipulations; and, develop a training program to test whether the causal processes can be manipulated. This process model is expected to represent a major theoretical breakthrough for emotional intelligence research and to pave the way for evidence-based training programs.Read moreRead less

The treatment of personality as a fixed set of traits that produce similar responses across situations ignores human variability across situations which is needed for design of interventions to make humans happier and more effective at work. The results of tests of the integrated model of personality will be used to design interventions for the development of responses that lead to greater well being and effectiveness of managers in work settings.Read moreRead less
Enhancing Hypnotic Responding with Oxytocin. Although hypnosis has been studied for over a 100 years, little is understood about the neuroscience of hypnosis. This project represents the first investigation of the neural mechanisms underpinning hypnosis. At an applied level, this project has the potential to markedly increase the capacity for Australians to benefit from medical and psychological hypnosis. Hypnosis has been shown to assist in many medical and psychological conditions, and by developing the means to increase hypnotic responding, this project can directly enhance the physical and psychological health of Australians.Read moreRead less
Cognitive Cue Analysis: Seeing the Unseen in Human Performance. The aim of this project is to examine a radically new approach to the assessment of pilots. We have created a new theoretical model that links the way in which cues are accessed to the application of various skills including decision-making. We have created a new theoretical model that links the way in which cues are accessed to the application of various skills including decision-making. In validating this model, our objective is to develop a tool that will assist the evaluation of particular skills in a wide range of environments, including aviation. This significance of this project lies in the development of an innovative model of the relationship between between cues and the application of skills. We expect that the outcomes of this project will lead to much more efficient and accurate assessments of performance, and the opportunity to target particular skills. This will lead to savings for training organisations and increased safety in transportation industries.Read moreRead less
Predicting health, well-being, and educational success in emerging adults: An 8 year longitudinal study. This project will inform the community about factors that affect the psychological, physical, academic, and employment outcomes of emerging adults. It will improve our knowledge of why some young people do not reach their full potential. The project will provide a comprehensive assessment of factors associated with well-being across several domains. It will better equip and assist professionals to identify early those youth at risk of having poor psychological, health, and employment prospects post-school. The project will inform the development of intervention programs for young people and maximise their overall adjustment and well-being several years later.Read moreRead less
Optimising students’ academic trajectories: The role of growth (‘personal best’) goals. Too many students fail to reach their academic potential and, as a result, they risk being systematically denied a sense of academic ‘success’ and progress. Through a focus on academic growth (and ‘personal bests’), this research project traverses complex terrain to identify the role of growth goals and growth goal setting in students’ academic trajectories. It also tackles methodological challenges that have impeded research progress in this compelling area. Through strategic international and institutional links, the research program will identify innovative approaches to academic growth and growth goals that will significantly assist pedagogy and psychology aimed at optimising students’ academic potential.Read moreRead less
