This project aims to design a foundational human–agent learning framework to augment the decision making process, using reinforcement and closed-loop mechanisms to enable symbiosis between a human and an artificial-intelligence agent. It envisages significant new technologies to promote controllability and efficient and safe exploration of an environment for decision actions – drastically boosting learning effectiveness and interpretability in decision making. Expected outcomes will benefit national cybersecurity by improving our understanding of vulnerabilities and threats involving decision actions, and by ensuring that human feedback and evaluations can help prevent catastrophic events in explorations of dynamic and complex environments.Read moreRead less

This project will research how to crowd-source the collection and analysis of environmental animal sounds (for example, birds, frogs). This will enable a bio-acoustic observatory which provides a scalable, objective and permanent record of the environment, something hitherto impossible. The project will investigate how to engage the community of birdwatchers to extend their pastime online with new kinds of interactive tools to enable collaborative analysis of big audio data, and new kinds of birding experiences. Outcomes will be: new approaches to physical/virtual engagement in human-computer interaction; new approaches to analysing big data; a new validated ecological monitoring technique and concepts for sustainable knowledge generation communities.Read moreRead less

Next-generation sequencing technologies have brought a revolution in biology and healthcare, while taxing the ability of scientists and clinicians to identify and process relevant data, to make sense of it all and communicate it to others in a concise and meaningful way. This project aims to tackle this problem through fundamentally new approaches to data selection and visualisation at very large scale, actively encoding for insight into underlying biological and biomedical processes, bringing sustainable discovery of new relationships and variations within the data. The project aims to support new approaches to medical diagnosis and treatment, and offer crucial lessons to address the broader challenge of understanding large, complex data sets.Read moreRead less
An integrated and real-time passenger travel and public transport service information system. This project will help the Department of Transport provide improved services to the public through a better understanding of journey planning demands in comparison to public transport services. By integrating research through design methods with technological solutions, the project will deliver better quality of service and higher customer satisfaction.
Building crowd sourced data curation processes. This project aims to tackle the growing problem of data curation. This project aims to tackle the growing problem of data curation. The capacity to effectively utilise the increasing number of datasets available to organisations for timely decision making is diminishing, due to onerous data preparation and curation tasks that have to be performed before the data can be consumed by analytics platforms. The project will be a first attempt at using a novel process-oriented approach in micro-task crowdsourcing, and will create new knowledge to harness the full potential of crowd sourced data curation. This is expected to make a significant benefit towards enhanced organisational capacity to accelerate the time-to-value from data analytics projects.Read moreRead less
Quantifying intake of food prepared outside home during emerging adulthood. This project aims to explore the role that food prepared outside the home versus within the home plays in the diets of young adults. The project plans to use data mining to understand where, when and with whom young adults buy food, and the nutritional composition and overall contribution to diet of these foods. The project will use a newly designed and tested Smartphone application to transform data collection and processing, and enable continuous digital photography. The knowledge gained is intended to form the evidence base for formulation of policy and electronic and mobile-health promotion to reverse the problem of young adults gaining more weight than any other group in Australia.Read moreRead less

Visual analytics for massive multivariate networks. This project aims to create methods to visually analyse massive multivariate networks. The amount of network data available has exploded in recent years: software systems, social networks and biological systems have millions of nodes and billions of edges with multivariate attributes. Their size and complexity makes these data sets hard to exploit. More efficient ways to understand the data are needed. This project will design, implement and evaluate visualisation methods for massive multivariate network data sets. This research is expected to be used by Australian software development, biotechnology and security companies to exploit their data.Read moreRead less
Visual analytics for high volume multi attribute financial data streams. While our ability to accumulate data (such as financial data) is increasing, our capability to analyse them is still inadequate despite technological improvements. The new Visual Analytics methods will allow processing of the massive and time-varying data so that the time-critical decisions can be made with minimum effort.

This project aims to create a terrestrial acoustic sensor network comprising 450 listening stations across Australia. Acoustic sensing transforms environmental science by recording vocal species 24/7, providing spatial and temporal data for ecosystem monitoring and research. Australia has leading research expertise in this emerging field, which is relevant to its fragile and mega-diverse environment. This project is expected to enable and develop continental scale environmental monitoring, and the data generated will be made freely available to all online, enabling new science in understanding ecosystems, long-term environmental change, data visualisation and acoustic science.Read moreRead less
