    Understanding And Controlling Thrombus Formation

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $896,888.00
    Summary
The rapid interactions of circulating human blood platelets is critical to prevent bleeding, but can cause thrombotic diseases (heart attack, stroke). These highly regulated interactions involve specific adhesive proteins. Our studies will define factors regulating platelet interactions. Imaging the thrombotic process will quantify platelet function at an unprecedented resolution and we have a panel of new candidate reagents that will be assessed for antithrombotic potential.

Australia confronts new types of security threat in the form of terrorist networks, sophisticated money-laundering and people-smuggling operations. The AFP and prosecutors are developing new display technologies to explain complex information to jurors, in the process simplifying court processes and shortening trials. At the cutting edge of this development are interactive displays, including computer simulations and 360o crime scene reconstructions. Judges will use empirical information about how juries use such information in order to develop appropriate guidelines for admitting interactive visual evidence, while court planners and architects will use the project data to identify implications for court procedures and design.

    Funding Amount
    $330,000.00
    Summary
Theory and applications of three dimensional fractal transformations. The purpose of this project is to develop the theory and algorithms for a new class of continuous mappings between fractals. Outcomes include a better understanding of fractals, substantially better algorithms for fractal compression and many new applications.

Global Citizen Deliberation: Analysing a Deliberative Documentary. The project will enact and film the world’s first truly global citizens’ deliberation, a global citizens’ assembly (GCA) on genome editing, and proceed to analyse the impact of the ‘deliberative documentary’ film on public understanding of complex, fast-evolving science and technology. It will investigate the cross-cultural capacity of citizens to deliberate complex value-laden issues, and so ascertain prospects for an informed global public response to challenges posed by genome editing. Research will test the effects of the deliberative documentary on viewers, examining benefits of communicating complex issues via the work of the GCA. Other benefits include improving public trust in governance and advancing the Australian film industry.

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $270,000.00
    Summary
Integrated high-performance control of aerial robots in dynamic environments. The outcomes of this project will enable novice pilots to safely operate aerial robots in dangerous and dynamic environments through novel intuitive user interfaces and advanced control algorithms. The project will contribute strongly to Australia's presence in the emerging world market of unmanned aerial vehicles.
