The aim of my project grant is to develop a portable electrodiagnostic test to classify balance disorders by compiling a statistically validated database of eye movement patterns associated with specific balance disorders. What is unique about this electrodiagnostic balance disorder test, which distinguishes it from but also complement conventional balance function tests, is its ability not only to show an impairment of balance function, but it can differentiate between balance disorders.

A powerful, life-saving and cheap antibiotic, gentamicin, has one potential serious permanent side-effect: loss of balance due to damage to the balance organs of the inner ears. Detected early, the inner ear damage can be reversed by stopping gentamicin. Until now there has been no way of monitoring inner ear balance at the bedside. Summary
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is the major therapy used for the inflammatory neuropathies GBS, CIDP and for multifocal neuropathy. The cost of IVIg for these neuropathies in Australia is approximately 60 million dollars per year. As new indications for IVIg continue to be developed the resource becomes more valuable. We plan to explore the mechanism of action of IVIg with the aim of saving this precious resource and providing significant financial savings to the health service.

Summary
Chronic pain, mania and depression are common health problems worldwide and represent an enormous burden of illness. Current treatments may be costly, invasive and have serious side-effects. In the proposed project, demonstration of therapeutic benefit with a novel, simple method of brain stimulation without such limitations could change how these disorders are managed. Moreover, the findings would be of substantial significance in developing countries where treatments are often non-existent.
