This is a particularly important issue for Australia given our relative isolation arising from geographical distance and lack of attachment to a major trading bloc such as the EU or NAFTA.Read moreRead less
Iron and phosphorus recovery from ferric precipitation sludge. To minimise health risks and environmental pollution, water and wastewater treatment processes often use iron salts to eliminate phosphate and other pollutants. This generates large amounts of chemical sludge that is typically sent to landfill. The benefits of this new process will be the recovery of both the iron, which can be reused in the process, and the phosphate, which is a key component in fertiliser. Since phosphate is a limited natural resource with an increasingly high value, the recovery and recycling of this critical element in food production is highly important. The process will also avoid a large part of the sludge production and will make the water treatment processes more cost-effective.Read moreRead less
Mining venture risk: novel econometric methods to integrate joint financial and geological uncertainty into dynamic risk forecasting measures. The mining industry is nationally important: it contributed $33,927M to Australia's GDP in 2002-3. This project's outcomes - sophisticated statistical and econometric tools - will significantly improve capability for forecasting overall risk to mining projects requiring vast upfront, irreversible investments, and contribute to its efficiency and international competitiveness. Innovative methods driven by data from complex financial and geological systems will integrate price volatility risk and orebody uncertainty in a real options framework, providing holistic, rigorous measurement of mining venture risk. Xstrata Queensland Ltd will strongly support and participate in research training of an identified candidate to deliver discoveries to the wider industry.Read moreRead less

This project directly supports the National Research Priority 4: Safeguarding Australia. More specifically, it aims at creating mechanisms that will make it more difficult to use the Internet as a platform for launching attacks against the business processes of Australian organisations that provide and consume Web services. At the same time this will stimulate the establishment of high quality WS markets. As direct social benefit of this research, Australian organisations will be able to integrate the best quality Web services as part of their business processes, and thereby avoid being negatively impacted by low quality and deceptive Web services. The reliability and maintenance of pump stations is of paramount importance to the water utility industries. In Australia, the maintenance of assets for the water and wastewater industry amounts to $927m per annum. This research will develop an intelligent maintenance decision support system to reduce maintenance costs in pumping stations with increased reliability. The outcomes of the research will significantly improve the reliability and supply security of water systems to Queensland's rural and regional communities and industries. It will also advance the body of knowledge of the field of integrated asset management and enhance Australia's international standing in this field.Read moreRead less

Currently, policymakers require a much clearer understanding of the impacts of different carbon abatement policies. Mounting evidence on global warming is making this an increasingly urgent priority. The proposed project is specifically concerned with using state of the art economic modelling approaches to give the best advice possible to policymakers in crafting an environmentally sustainable set of economic policy instruments that can maintain our enviable standard of living well into the future. The findings of the project will be available before the new Kyoto negotiation round commences.Read moreRead less
An investigation of the impacts of increased power supply to the national grid by wind generators on the Australian electricity industry. The aim of this project is to discover the most economical and effective way to accommodate large increases in wind power into the national grid and to understand the effects on the national electricity market. This is crucial to ensure stability of electricity supply and affordable prices in the transition towards a low carbon economy.
Zeroing in on food waste: Measuring, understanding and reducing food waste. By developing a socio-culturally aware public education and social marketing programme to reduce food waste behaviours, the proposal addresses the national research priority area of an environmentally sustainable Australia. Reducing food waste by just 10% would save ~$530 million worth of wasted expenditure on food and reduce food waste in landfill by ~300,000 tonnes per annum, thereby reducing the costs associated with ....Zeroing in on food waste: Measuring, understanding and reducing food waste. By developing a socio-culturally aware public education and social marketing programme to reduce food waste behaviours, the proposal addresses the national research priority area of an environmentally sustainable Australia. Reducing food waste by just 10% would save ~$530 million worth of wasted expenditure on food and reduce food waste in landfill by ~300,000 tonnes per annum, thereby reducing the costs associated with disposal and the release of harmful methane gases. The methodology refined by this project to understand food waste will provide the basis for efficient and sustainable food waste reduction strategies and provide an approach that can be generalised to other waste streams with strong socio-cultural determinants.Read moreRead less

The coal industry, which is a major contributor to the Australian economy, urgently needs a new washability method following its decision to abandon the existing laboratory standard. The existing method relies on the use of heavy organic liquids which are known to be toxic to human health. The 'water-based' approach proposed in this study overcomes the problem of risk to human health, thus benefiting Australian workers, the immediate industry, and wider community. New separation technologies that could benefit the minerals industries and other key industries should follow. The project will also result in the education and training of two postgraduate students, and the advancement of two postdoctoral researchers in this area of industry. Read moreRead less

This project aims to reduce the strain on urban wastewater treatment plants by removing and recovering nutrients from water collected in residential and commercial buildings. Urban wastewater treatment plants in Australia are under pressure from increasing population and urbanisation, and there are also ever stricter environmental regulations on discharge of nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) into receiving waters. With many plants operating close to capacity, water utilities may face large expenditure to increase the capacity of existing treatment facilities. This project proposes an alternative solution: decentralised removal and recovery of nutrients from urine separated at the source. It is planned that novel microbial fuel cell technology will be developed to deliver an economical solution, which will additionally generate valuable fertiliser as a by-product.Read moreRead less
