    Alcohol And Striatal Adaptation

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $972,844.00
    Summary
In pilot studies, we have found that specific genes are modulated by long-term alcohol intake in a discrete part of the brain that drives habitual behaviours. We will now repeat these studies in post-mortem brain tissue from human alcoholics and age-matched controls. In addition, we will further characterise the functional consequences of long-term alcohol intake within this specific brain region and test new approaches to reduce the urge to consume alcohol.

Radiosensitisation Of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas By Modulating Glucose Metabolism

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $325,000.00
    Summary
Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) represents the most aggressive cancer of childhood with no effective treatment available and radiotherapy is the only form of treatment that offers a transient benefit. We have successfully grown the first DIPG cells in the laboratory and found a new approach to radiosensitise them by targeting glucose metabolism. We will build on these findings and develop this treatment strategy to make this novel therapy available to children with this deadly disease.

Circulating Tumour DNA To Monitor Treatment Response And Resistance In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $876,950.00
    Summary
Many cancers shed small amounts of DNA (ctDNA) into the patient’s bloodstream and recent advances in genomic technologies now allow levels of ctDNA to be accurately measured in the blood. Changes in ctDNA levels have potential to be used as specific markers of disease progression and/or response to cancer therapy. This project will evaluate if ctDNA can be used to monitor treatment responses and individualise treatment decisions in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Circulating Tumour DNA As A Noninvasive Biomarker In Melanoma

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,299,114.00
    Summary
The expanding repertoire of treatment options in melanoma is bringing into focus the need for improved ways to accurately monitor treatment responses and guide treatment decisions. Many cancers shed small amounts of DNA (ctDNA) into the bloodstream and changes in ctDNA levels have potential to be used as specific markers of response to cancer therapy. This project will evaluate if ctDNA can be used as a form of ‘liquid biopsy’ to guide treatment decisions in patients with melanoma.

Targeting Mitochondrial Metabolism In Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas As A Novel Therapeutic Strategy

Development Of Vinorelbine As A Tablet Based Therapy To Cure Ectopic Pregnancies

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $361,594.00
    Summary
Ectopic pregnancies occur if the pregnancy implants in the Fallopian tube. They can be deadly and most are treated surgically. We will examine the exciting possibility that instead of surgery, ectopic pregnancies may be cured with a tablet taken just once. We will perform laboratory studies and a clinical trial, giving vinorelbine to women with ectopic pregnancies.

A Potential Analgesic Target In A Novel Clinically-relevant Neuropathic Pain Pathway.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $685,811.00
    Summary
Persistent pain arising from tissue damage, to nerves, muscles or joints for example, is devastating for patients and a huge social and economic burden. This work will investigate one of the pathways that goes awry after sensory nerves are damaged. These experiments will also test whether a drug being developed to treat Alzheimer's disease is effective at blocking the persistent nerve hypersensitivity that sometimes develops after injury.

Genetics To Function: Identifying Genes Mediating The Biological Effects Of Type 2 Diabetes GWAS SNPs

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $438,075.00
    Summary
Rates of type 2 diabetes are rising dramatically, and current efforts are failing to stem its progression. More information about why the disease develops is urgently needed. We apply an innovative approach to accelerate the latest genetic discoveries in diabetes to understand the mechanism behind the disease process. This knowledge will lead to new ways to control diabetes through development of novel therapies.

Improving Clinical Translation In Stroke: Targeting Cerebral Oedema In A Large Animal Model

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $637,530.00
    Summary
A common and life-threatening complication of stroke is brain swelling which is the leading cause of death within one week of stroke and a predictor of poor outcome. Current treatments for brain swelling are inadequate. We have developed a drug that blocks the action of the neuropeptide substance P, which is involved in the development of swelling. We will assess the efficacy of this treatment to reduce brain swelling and improve long-term outcome in a relevant pre-clinical model of stroke.

A Randomised Controlled Trial Of A Web-based, Organisational Systems Change Intervention To Increase Childcare Service Adherence To Dietary Guidelines

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,044,145.00
    Summary
To improve children's health, leading health agencies recommend that childcare services provide foods to children consistent with dietary guidelines. The majority of Australian childcare services however do not provide foods that meet these guidelines. Using the highest quality research design, this study will test the effectiveness of a web-based intervention in supporting childcare services to improve the nutritional quality of food provided to children in care.
