Summary
Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is key to more effective early intervention. Current biomarkers are expensive and are not suited for detecting the subtle changes in brain function that occur during the initial stages of the disease. Non-invasive brain stimulation is pain-free and inexpensive, and can directly probe brain function in conscious humans. This project will investigate whether these techniques might be used to identify markers of early brain dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease.
Vasoactive Nutrients To Promote Healthy Ageing In Postmenopausal Women

Summary
Poor circulatory function in the brain, associated with mood and cognitive disturbances, can be further exacerbated by ageing and estrogen deprivation at postmenopause. My research will determine whether phytoestrogen supplementation with either resveratrol or genistein for 2 years can counteract menopause-related impairments in mood and mental performance by enhancing cerebral vasodilator function and whether the magnitude of improvement differs between early and late menopausal years.
Improving Human FMRI Through Modeling And Imaging Microvascular Dynamics

Summary
In this project we aim to establish a reliable vascular baseline to improve mapping of both small-scale functional architecture and large-scale brain networks in functional human brain mapping using MRI. By mapping the grey matter vasculature with high detail in both humans and animals, and by computing and matching of these atlases across species we will be able to validate this approach in vivo to confirm the better spatial specificity of the newly developed approach.

Previous research supports the notion that physical activity plays a role in maintaining brain health and preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Nevertheless, the type of activity (i.e. intensity of physical activity) that is of greatest benefit to the brain is yet to be established. This project aims to identify the most beneficial exercise intensity, in terms of brain health, measured utilising brain imaging technology.

This program of research aims to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying the relationship between sleep dysfunction and dementia. The OzENTER-TBI project will advance the care of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Researchers will collaborate with the European CENTER-TBI project to characterise and classify TBI. They will contribute to large data sets which will explore the differences between sites and countries on TBI outcomes. They will also investigate emerging technologies in TBI. It will have a profound impact on treatment, health care costs and ultimately quality of life for TBI patients worldwide.
