ARC Centre of Excellence for Carbon Science and Innovation. This Centre aims to develop carbon-based catalysts for clean energy, CO2 capture, and green chemistry to reduce emissions. The Centre expects to use pioneering data-guided atomic-precision synthesis and multiscale analysis to transform fundamental science of carbon materials. Expected outcomes of this Centre will benefit new technologies for energy, environmental, and green chemical industries by utilising abundant sunlight, seawater, and waste feedstocks. This should provide significant benefits, through industry collaborations, our new world-leading capacity will train a next generation of game changers to empower emerging carbon industries to solve grand socio-economic challenges, ultimately meeting zero-carbon emissions targets.

    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $375,000.00
    Summary
Carbon nanotube-based supercapacitors: breaking the energy density limit. Novel electrodes will be nano-architectured by using ultralong single-walled carbon nanotube arrays and transition metal oxides to produce next-generation supercapacitors. The outcomes will lead to unprecedented energy densities in energy storage devices for sustainable future energy solutions.

In-situ elevated temperature nano-indentation. In-situ elevated temperature nano-indentation: Nano-indentation has revolutionised the characterisation of the mechanical properties of materials. It permits the elastic, plastic and cracking response to be probed at the nano-scale. In-situ elevated temperature nano-indentation: Nano-indentation has revolutionised the characterisation of the mechanical properties of materials. It permits the elastic, plastic and cracking response to be probed at the nano-scale. This project will provide a state-of-the-art Hysitron nano-indenter configured to permit isothermal elevated temperature operation (up to 650 degrees Celsius). The unit will be the only one in Australia with this capability and amongst the few available globally. Temperature is the single most important parameter in material processing. This facility will permit the assembled team to be among the first in the world to apply this technique to the development of new materials with superior processing performance in addition to enhanced behaviour in service.
