Summary
Eosinophils are rare blood cells that play a key role in the pathology of asthma and other inflammatory diseases. Asthma afflicts hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and excess eosinophils are common in many patients. We aim to define the cells involved in eosinophil development, and we will use cutting-edge technologies to identify new eosinophil regulators that may serve as drug targets or as novel entry points for development of therapeutics for asthma or other inflammatory diseases.

Trust-oriented data analytics is essential in online social networks for reducing deceitful interactions and enhancing trust between users. This project aims to systematically devise innovative solutions by considering rich social contextual information as an important source of trust. The expected outcomes of this project include innovative solutions from a fundamental perspective to the challenges of context-aware trust propagation, trust network searching/matching, and trustworthy/malicious user prediction in online social networks. This project is significant as it will advance the knowledge base for enabling a trustworthy social networking environment, benefiting billions of Australian and worldwide online social network users.Read moreRead less
Chronic pain will affect most of us at one point in our life, and there is a need for new drugs to manage this condition. The goal of this project is to use a combined state-of-the-art genetics approaches in fruit flies, mice, rats, and humans, to identify and validate new genes that contribute to chronic pain, with the clear long term possibility to develop new strategic therapies to treat chronic pain disease.
Cancer is linked to mutations in a large variety of genes but how these changes impact on cell behaviour is often unknown. We are using functional genomics in zebrafish to identify genes that are essential for rapid rates of proliferation by intestinal epithelial cells. Seven genes have been cloned so far and our next task is to analyse, using mouse models and human cancer transcriptome analysis, whether any are indispensable for cancer growth and thereby present suitable targets for therapy.

This project aims to investigate new disk-resident learned indexing algorithms to store and process data in database systems by advancing the state-of-the-art in memory-resident learned modeling. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the area of digital storage technologies utilising novel and efficient techniques in learned indexing for big data. This should provide significant benefits to enable modern database systems to scale with the massive growth of data, improve the efficiency of data processing, improve the effectiveness of projects that utilise big data, and dramatically reduce energy costs in Australian data centres when storing and retrieving data from databases and lower their carbon footprints.Read moreRead less
Loss-based Bayesian Prediction. This project proposes a new paradigm for prediction. Using state-of-the-art computational methods, the project aims to produce accurate, fit for purpose, predictions which, by design, reduce the loss incurred when the prediction is inaccurate. Theoretical validation of the new predictive method, without reliance on knowledge of the correct statistical model, is an expected outcome, as is an extensive numerical assessment of its performance in empirical settings. The new paradigm should produce significant benefits for all fields in which the consequences of predictive inaccuracy are severe. Problems that lead to substantial economic, financial or environmental loss if predictions are incorrect will be given particular attention.Read moreRead less

The human body has more than a trillion of them at any one time, and they are replaced every week by the blood producing cells that reside in the bone marrow. Keeping the normal number of platelets steady is incredibly important any significant drop can result in a life-threatening hemorrhage. The clinical name given to a low platelet count is thrombocytopenia, and it is a very common problem. It can be caused by genetic mutations, viral infections, or by cancer treatments like chemotherapy. The only way to raise platelet numbers in a person with thrombocytopenia is a blood transfusion, which carries with it risks and potential side effects. While we understand quite a lot about how the body produces platelets, we don t know anywhere enough to be able to develop new treatments. Our work is focused on the identification of the genes that control the process, beginning with mouse models of thrombocytopenia, genome mapping, gene isolation, and finally, making the links between the newly identified genes and patients with thrombocytopenia. It will give us a much better understanding of how platelets are produced, how things go wrong in human disease, and how new therapies might be developed to treat them.Read moreRead less
