Summary
Access for Australian Researchers to Advanced Neutron Beam Techniques. The major national benefit will be access, by peer review, to the 35 specialised instruments at the world's leading pulsed Neutron and Muon source, ISIS. This complements the access to the eight neutron instruments that will operate at the Australian Reactor OPAL. This will support (or enable) high quality research into areas as diverse as materials development, mineral processing and aspects of biological and medical scien ....Access for Australian Researchers to Advanced Neutron Beam Techniques. This complements the access to the eight neutron instruments that will operate at the Australian Reactor OPAL. This will support (or enable) high quality research into areas as diverse as materials development, mineral processing and aspects of biological and medical science. It will facilitate international collaborations that are important for both research and post-graduate student training.Read moreRead less

Effective mineral exploration strategies in complex basement terrains are increasingly reliant on integrated, data-rich, tectonic models. In this project we will focus a large multidisciplinary team to develop a tectonic model for the evolution of the Musgrave Block in central Australia. This large, poorly understood terrain occupies a critical structural location, separating the northern and southern Australian cratons. By constraining models of crustal evolution and architecture, the project will underpin future mineral exploration programs in this highly prospective greenfields region and define the role of the Musgrave Block in the assembly of Proterozoic Australia.Read moreRead less
Developing a Tectonic Framework for the Gawler Craton: Paving the Way for Successful Mineral Exploration Programs. The late Archaean to Mesoproterozoic Gawler Craton is the major Precambrian province in southern Australia. However, despite containing one of the largest orebodies on Earth, exploration expenditure in the craton has been comparatively low, and hampered by insufficient knowledge of the craton's tectonic systems. This project uses an integrated package of geochemical, isotopic and geophysical tools to develop a comprehensive model for the tectonic evolution of the Gawler Craton. The project will constrain the development of the Gawler Craton in the context of Precambrian Australian evolution, and offer insights into universal processes of lithosphere formation, growth and stabilisation.Read moreRead less
Tectonic links between the Musgrave Province and the North Australian Craton: correlations, event chronology, and tectonothermal regimes. Developing effective mineral exploration strategies relies on data-rich tectonic models that seek to explain the full history of a terrain. In the Australian context the tectonic evolution of the Musgrave Province is a key focus of the minerals industry due to its widely recognised potential for base-metal mineralisation. This project will develop tectonic models that encompass the evolution of the Musgrave Province and the adjacent North Australia Craton. The outcomes of the project will reduce risk to mineral explorers and make an important contribution to the broader question Australia's Proterozoic evolution.Read moreRead less

Protein-protein interactions mediate all fundamental cellular processes, yet the structural complexity of protein assemblies mean they are often difficult to characterise using traditional analytical methods. This project will develop and demonstrate novel mass spectrometric approaches towards a molecular level description of the structure and interactions of biological protein complexes, which in turn may underpin the rational design of drugs for the treatment of a range of human health conditions. This project will also provide training of young researchers to the highest international standards in mass spectrometry and protein science, for benefit to Australian industry and research.Read moreRead less
Negative ion mass spectrometry: fundamentals and applied applications. 1. We seek to establish negative ion mass spectrometry as a major technological tool for the sequencing of peptides and proteins. In this context, we will investigate the structures and modes of action of peptide complexes which may be of importance for the treatment and control of heart disease and stroke.
2. Negative ions of known structure will be converted (in the mass spectrometer) into transient (and reactive) molecule ....Negative ion mass spectrometry: fundamentals and applied applications. 1. 2. Negative ions of known structure will be converted (in the mass spectrometer) into transient (and reactive) molecules which are present in interstellar ice and dust clouds. The structures and chemistry of such molecules are of importance in understanding the origins of life on this planet.Read moreRead less
The formation of negative ions and neutrals in the gas phase. Structure, reactivity and mechanism. Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to provide information concerning the structure of a chemical compound: it is particularly useful when dealing with small amounts of biologically important molecules. It is also a facility in which charged species can be converted into transient neutrals. This project will (i) produce information about negative ion fragmentations in order to extend ....The formation of negative ions and neutrals in the gas phase. Structure, reactivity and mechanism. Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to provide information concerning the structure of a chemical compound: it is particularly useful when dealing with small amounts of biologically important molecules. It is also a facility in which charged species can be converted into transient neutrals. This project will (i) produce information about negative ion fragmentations in order to extend the applicability of analytical negative-ion mass spectrometry, (ii) form neutral molecules and related species which are found in stellar dust clouds and investigate their chemistry, and (iii) train graduates in ion chemistry to the highest international standards.Read moreRead less
Cumulenes and Heterocumulenes - Stellar Molecules and New Materials. This project involves the formation and characterisation of transient neutrals (formed in the mass spectrometer by neutralisation of charged precursor ions) which are either found in stellar dust clouds, or related molecules which may be either potential stellar molecules or have importance in the development of new materials. This work may lead to a better understanding of how biomolecules are formed in interstellar environs. ....Cumulenes and Heterocumulenes - Stellar Molecules and New Materials. This work may lead to a better understanding of how biomolecules are formed in interstellar environs. The Adelaide and Berlin groups are internationally known, already with ongoing collaboration. This application seeks to extend the scope of this world-class research, and to train the premier graduate students in astrochemistry.Read moreRead less
