Appropriate support, including responsive health services, is a key to assisting people with disabilities. Disability is most common in older age but acquired disability, particularly following injury, is important in younger people. This research proposal investigates functioning, disability and rehabilitation across the adult lifespan and aims to translate research findings into policy and practice.

We will conduct a randomised controlled trial to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a low-cost and sustainable community-based model of care for people who have returned home after spinal cord injury in Bangladesh. The model of care involves regular telephone-based monitoring and provision of ongoing education and advice with a limited home-based service. This package of care will be provided in the first two years following discharge from hospital.

Summary
Rett syndrome is a rare but serious genetic neurological disorder affecting mainly girls and often complicated by spinal curvature and poor growth. This project will use national register data collected over 16 years to examine change in functional abilities and progression of the scoliosis curve. It will develop guidelines and improve processes to assist with diagnosis and will comprehensively evaluate the surgical treatments used in the management of scoliosis and growth problems.
